The Hostelz.com Review
Hostel Roxelana is far out of the city centre, with at least a forty-minute walk from the old town where the life of the city is. It is closer to the train station, so if you have an early train it’s a good place to choose. The hostel is inside a castle-like building, and with its balcony built of stone, it’s got real character.
The Location
The location is not very good -- it's so far from all the bars and clubs. There are only a few shops nearby and no twenty-four-hour ones like other parts of the city. We were not offered any discounts on eating when we stayed there (which is advertised).
Rooms and Bathrooms
The dorms are all cramped, people were sleeping on the floor many nights we were there, and they kept taking people in even though they had no beds left. They do not care about the comfort of the other guest, only how much money they can make for a night. With only one shower/toilet, and a second toilet that is as bad as an outhouse, you have to be prepared for long lines and cold showers if the place is full (or over full). The place was not very clean or tidy when we were there either -- even before the place was full, it needed a good cleaning. The sheets are worn and could be newer but are clean at least. The bunk beds are flimsy wooded things that creak and move when you sleep on them and the mattress is thin and could be better as well.
Common Spaces
There is no common room -- they decided to stick in more beds to cram more people into the small place than to give somewhere to sit and chat. There is no PC for guests to use, but sometimes there is a small laptop if the owner is around, and there is Wi-Fi. The kitchen is well equipped but needs a good cleaning. The security is a joke -- the front door is always open so anyone can walk in day or night into the common room and dorms. We were worried for our stuff as there are no lockers to speak of, but there is twenty-four-hour reception (normally a young girl that could not stop anyone from robbing anything if they wanted to). The free breakfast is some toast and maybe an apple or yogurt if you’re lucky and ask for it.
Summary
Overall this hostel is very cheap -- the owner will give you the best price to have you stay with him, and so if you are staying you can always discuss the price with him to get a better deal. The owner does a lot for his guests -- he takes them out in town and does free walking tours and pub crawls. The owner is always around the hostel; he sleeps there most nights in dorm rooms and cooks his dinner there as well. If you want a cheap place to stay that is out of the town centre, then this is the place for you but there are better hostels in Lviv.

Not close, but good. Hostel Roxelana is not the closest to the center but it is housed in a mini castle-like building and the owner is the most friendly person you will ever met, so be prepared to be treated well there! — Anonymous (2010-06-23)
