The Hostelz.com Review
Erasmus Hostel is the cheapest in Istanbul and in a convenient location, however it's definitely not the cleanest of hostels. The hostel is an excellent place to meet fellow travelers both long and short-term.

The Location

The hostel is located conveniently in Karakoy between the sightseeing area of Sultanahmet and the bars and restaurants of Taksim.Galatasary. The area is very empty at night and a little unsafe. There is a discount supermarket located a minute's walk from the hostel that's open until 9 p.m. The hostel is a few minutes away from Karakoy Tram Station. Erasmus Hostel is a little difficult to find as the entrance is unmarked. There is no reception but an upstairs common room is where new arrivals congregate.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Once again, you get what you pay for. The dorms are cramped, noisy, and unclean. The bunk beds are side by side, so it's possible to roll onto another guest in the middle of the night. The stairs creak very badly, so be prepared for an early morning. The beds and dorms rooms are generally unclean. There are no locks on the door and no lockers for securing valuables of a hostel safe, so ensure you have a lockable bag. There are only two bathrooms for the entire hostel (both are integrated shower/toilet types). If you can manage to find one of the bathrooms free, you are likely to find them generally unclean and often leaking water.

Common Spaces

The common area is on the top floor and can seat around twenty people comfortably. There are no chairs and guests sit on cushions on the floor. A small kitchenette is attached to the common area and includes a small hotplate, sink, cutlery and crockery, and a large fridge. Wi-Fi is reasonable and occasionally interrupted. Although the common area is under-equipped, it is a fantastic place to met fellow travelers and at night there are always party-minded travelers. Smoking is allowed in the common room.

Summary

Erasmus Hostel is for unfussy, budget-minded travelers. Do not expect service, cleanliness, or amenities. But you can expect to have a fantastic time meeting some very interesting people.
