The Hostelz.com Review
Newman House is the only hostel in Saint John and just opened this year. It was a family home before and the owner still lives upstairs, while downstairs is now made up for backpackers. Since it sleeps only six people, it has still the atmosphere of a family home.
The Location
The hostel is situated west of uptown Saint John in a quite neighborhood. From the bus station at Douglas Street it is a ten-minute walk to the hostel (follow Landsdome Street to the west and than north on Adelaide Street and you will hit Newman Street). To downtown Saint John you will need about thirty minutes, but it is a nice walk along the harbor. The attraction of Saint John -- the Reversing Falls -- can be reached within thirty minutes as well. To get to Irving Nature Park and to Rockwood Park you will need to take the public transport (bus stop at Main Street is about ten minutes from the hostel) or the car. There is a small grocery store around the corner and a mall, a beer store, and a bowling hall within fifteen minutes walking distance. Bars, restaurants, and clubs are mostly in uptown Saint John and can be reached within thirty minutes.
Rooms and Bathrooms
There are single, twin, and double rooms, but the price for a bed is no more than a dorm bed in other hostels. The rooms are huge and come with free bedding and towels. The rooms, the kitchen, and the bathrooms are all very clean and tidy. Security seems to be very good with a lock for the door to the hostel and locks for each room.
Common Spaces
There is a really comfy common area with a couch, chairs, a table, and a TV to relax. The kitchen is very well equipped -- so if you want to cook or to bake you will find everything. There is a very good free breakfast (coffee, tea, milk, juice, bread, marmalade, honey, eggs) and all ingredients in the kitchen can be used for free as well. The computer, the wireless, and the laundry facilities are for free as well. In the backyard there is an outside sitting area with a BBQ and in front of the house there is free parking on the street.
Summary
This hostel is a very good place to stay for a night or for a long period since it feels like home. You can explore Saint John, the surrounding area, or use this place as a stopover for the ferry to Digby in Nova Scotia. You can reach Grand Manan Island and Fundy National Park from here within an hour by car.
It is a very clean, tidy, and secure home with two resident cats looking for backpackers to cuddle with them.

Apparently not open to tourists? I went to the place hoping to find a bed. I saw no sign on the street indicating a hostel. According to a neighbor, the house is now rented to students. — Anonymous , Canada (2010-03-23)
