Hostelz.com's Review
You'll probably either love The Overstay or hate it. It's no ordinary hostel, as the accommodation side of it definitely isn't the main focus. It's a late-night bar, a live music venue, a modern art exhibition, and a total hipster hangout ... oh, and it has some sleeping facilities upstairs. Artists will probably feel at home here; you may, however, find that on your arrival you're just surrounded by hipsters doing a bar crawl of Southeast Asia. It's a very hard hostel to sum up, as it's great for certain types of people, but it's definitely not for all who pass through Bangkok.

The Location

This area of Bangkok feels like you are far from any tourist spot but it's great if you want to be among real city life with local Thai restaurants and street food vendors. The hostel is a little bit out of the way; however it's reachable by a ten-minute tuk-tuk from Koh San Road. It's hard to find a tuk-tuk or taxi driver that knows this road, so if you're having any problems, just ask to be dropped off at Koh San Road. From here, you'll only be a ten-minute ride away and more likely to find a driver that knows the place.

Walking from Koh San Road is quite simple, but will take thirty minutes. Head west over the main bridge that crosses the river (just get someone to point you in the direction of the river). After you cross the bridge, carry on for two kilometers until you come to a large junction with a flyover road. Turn right here and walk along the left side of this road, after two hundred meters, you will see a blue street sign with Thai writing and the number 39 written on it -- turn left here and walk to the end, turn right and you'll find the hostel on your right.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Don't expect any kind of luxury here. You'll find doors and walls put together rashly with materials with which you would board up an abandoned house. This place is purely about the atmosphere and the people in it. Dorms are kitted out with simple bunk beds and the privates have thin double beds. There's definitely a security issue here, as the dorms are wide open and allow anyone to walk in; if staying in a private room, bring a padlock as not all come with locks. Wi-Fi is very strong and the bathrooms are kept clean; there's one on each floor, so queuing is rarely a problem, but most only have cold showers.

Common Spaces

The main hostel common space, which is the bar/club, is the heart of the hostel. A full band setup sits at one end with guitars, mics, and a drum kit; the walls are covered in modern art and posters; and there's a pool table -- it really is an awesome venue, where even the locals drink. Upstairs there's a smaller area with couches where you'll find at least one person recovering from the night before, or even still passed out; it's pretty messy, but that adds to the freedom of the place.

Summary

The bar/club part of this place is awesome and regularly has music and comedy events -- you just need to ask yourself whether you want to sleep in the same place you party. It can be hard walking into a bar on your own and this entire place is no different, so if you're a solo traveler, keep that in mind if you choose to stay here.

2   Down and dirty but cheap Possibly the cheapest going in Bangkok at least in the area. A very run down place with doors that dont close let alone lock, even on the bathroom. Staff were friendly and made a fun party atmosphere. Not for everyone but if you dont mind roughing it to save a little money then it could be the one for you.  ()
