Unplugged Hostel stands out for the sheer number of bathrooms, shower rooms, and toilets per person so you know you will never be waiting around. Apart from that nothing really distinguishes this place.
The Location
The location is useful, but not ideal for a number of things. It is in easy walking distance to the beach, bus stops, and shops, but it is a bit of a walk into downtown. It is also a long walk to the main bus depot. In general, everything you need for a stay is on their doorstop, and in a generally nice and quiet neighbourhood too. The hostel can also be easy to find -- if you know where you are going and can speak Spanish. The bus from the airport drops you off about five hundred metres from the hostel, but you have to know where to get off and where to walk to from there -- especially in the dark.
Rooms and Bathrooms
There are many room options including private rooms. Dorm rooms are clean and spacious with lockers available for free (bring your own padlock). The doors are secure and the hostel also issues a blue wristband to identify hostel guests on entry and leaving. The bathrooms are very spacious and clean, with space to change and hang up your clothes.
Common Spaces
The common spaces are generally of a good standard, although the kitchen might be a bit small for busy periods. There is a TV room which doubles as an eating area, where a very hearty breakfast is served every morning. The TV room has cable TV and board games, but no DVDs. There is also a bar, which never seems to be open in the off-season. If it is open, you can only imagine that it will brighten up the atmosphere a lot more -- it could hardly get any more quiet than it already is.
Other sitting areas include an upstairs mini-TV room complete with sofas; two free, internet-providing desktop computers; and outside seating. Bikes are also available for hire, but you might want to avoid these, as they are not in the best condition.
Summary
If you are after a nice, comfortable stay, then this hostel is a good choice. The only thing to watch out for is the colder months -- the hostel is very cold and there doesn't seem to be any satisfactory heating in the place, so layer up!
