The Hostelz.com Review
The Milford Sound Lodge is the only budget accommodation within Fiordlands National Park where the head of the Milford Sound is located, thus they have a monopoly of sorts. The lodge itself is an older building located about a kilometer away from the village where the waterside boardwalk and café are located and where most of the buses stop. Most bus companies will drop you off at the lodge and the lodge has shuttles that accommodate you and your luggage back to town for your trip back out of the sound.

The best feature of the lodge is a large lounge full of sofas and coffee tables great for reading, playing games, conversing etc. The kitchen is well equipped but the setup is a bit cramped if you have more than 4 or 5 folks trying to make their dinners. The dorms are small and comfortable. It was evident that they had also given the bathrooms a remodel recently (compared to the rustic, older feel of the rest of the lodge). They were in great shape and always clean.

Given the area, if you don't have a car or other transportation to take you out to the local hiking tracks, there's very little to occupy your time for more than a day or so and Milford Lodge is a great place to put your feet up for the night but plan to head for bed early. Since the lodge is part of the Department of Conservation they run electricity from generators that get shut down at 11 PM and stay off until 6:30 AM so bring a flashlight!

Make sure you book early if you want what you are looking for, I though I was early (six weeks before) and wanted to book a double room. Was a bit late and ended up with a twin room. Still though, the room was spotless and came with free towels, and after moving the beds together we had a king sized bed. Kitchen, dining room, and lounge areas are great and spacious. Toilets and showers must be among the best ones we've encountered, and there are lots of them as well. The scenery is what makes this place though, where else are you surrounded by mountains, rivers, and a sound. Make yourself a favor and don't just come here for a quick boat tour, stay a day or two and just relax in this beautiful place!

This was a super hostel and as the only accommodation in Milford worth a stay by anyone. The location is fantastic, the rooms cosy enough and the communal areas large with plenty of games to play. The generated power goes off at eleven which means most people turn in for a good nights sleep making nice and quite. The only problem we had was that they had no recollection of our booking, however they were very accommodating and promptly found us a room, even though they were full, and apologised for the mix up. So just be sure to confirm your booking in advance and you will have no problems.

I stayed here in Oct. 2002 - I drove in and the dorms were full, so I elected to stay in my tent out in the parking lots and it was cold and rainy that night, but I survived. What I want to mention is the excellent cafe. The food was delicious and served weith pride.

This place has the best location of any hostel I've been to, try and prove me wrong! Most people arrive in Milford and hit the boat cruise for an hour and a half and then drive back to Queenstown. Do yourself a favor, look around, and stay here. The hostel is well set up, has a nice communal area and kitchen, and great showers. I walked the Milford track and stayed here for two days before continuing over on the Routeburn Track back to Queenstown. What a place to relax and take in the scenery. Just make sure you book early in the summer.
