The Milford Sound Lodge is the only budget accommodation within Fiordlands National Park where the head of the Milford Sound is located, thus they have a monopoly of sorts. The lodge itself is an older building located about a kilometer away from the village where the waterside boardwalk and café are located and where most of the buses stop. Most bus companies will drop you off at the lodge and the lodge has shuttles that accommodate you and your luggage back to town for your trip back out of the sound.
The best feature of the lodge is a large lounge full of sofas and coffee tables great for reading, playing games, conversing etc. The kitchen is well equipped but the setup is a bit cramped if you have more than 4 or 5 folks trying to make their dinners. The dorms are small and comfortable. It was evident that they had also given the bathrooms a remodel recently (compared to the rustic, older feel of the rest of the lodge). They were in great shape and always clean.
Given the area, if you don't have a car or other transportation to take you out to the local hiking tracks, there's very little to occupy your time for more than a day or so and Milford Lodge is a great place to put your feet up for the night but plan to head for bed early. Since the lodge is part of the Department of Conservation they run electricity from generators that get shut down at 11 PM and stay off until 6:30 AM so bring a flashlight!
