Media Luna is a new hostel, opened to fill the void of hostels in the tourist city of Cartagena.
The Location
The location is in the area of Getsemeni, which is a ten-minute walk from the Old Town walls. The area is reasonably safe although taxis should be used at night. There are many restaurants and drinking spots in the vicinity. The hostel is located a twenty-minute taxi drive away from the main bus terminal.
Rooms and Bathrooms
There are approximately a hundred-sixty beds in total. The rooms are spacious and the hostel provides clean bed linen and towels (a refundable deposit must be left until check-out). The mattresses are comfortable, although top bunks are very high up. The rooms have security lockers for valuables but you need your own lock. Bathrooms are communal and clean, but the water is solar-heated, so there are not always hot showers.
Common Spaces
The courtyard of the building is one large common area, dominated by the swimming pool in the centre (it's more suited to relaxing in than doing lengths). There are many sun loungers around the pool for soaking up Cartagena's sun. The downside to this open area is that during the rainy season, there are limited areas to relax in until the rains pass. A TV room has satellite TV and three computers for free internet use. Wi-Fi is available in the courtyard of the hostel and some rooms.
Most evenings the terrace bar is open -- it serves reasonably priced drinks and there is public access via a separate stairway. There is a restaurant at the front of the hostel, also open to the public. You can settle your tab when checking out. There is a well-stocked kitchen available for guest use and there are supermarkets nearby.
The hostel is secure and the door is opened by the staff receptionist, who is there twenty-four hours a day. The reception area contains lots of information on other places in Colombia, accommodation, and transport links. Many people are in Cartagena traveling onward to Panama and there is information on the boats available. Activities in Cartagena, including the tour to the Totuma volcano mudbath or to the beaches, are available to book at the reception.
Summary
Media Luna is a good hostel and brings some competition to the hostel scene in Cartagena. Due to the limited number of hostels here, it tends to book up quickly.
