The Hostelz.com Review
From the outside, this hostel doesn't look very special. However, it is located in the heart of Dunedin and is an ideal location to explore the city. It is within two minutes walk of everything you need including museums, galleries, cafes, bars, and lots more.

The hostel is newly refurbished and this is reflected in the modern new rooms -- all of which have good beds, cosy duvets, and nice smelling linen. Lockers and drawers under the bed are provided for each person and ensure the rooms stay clean and tidy. Mixed and single sex dorms are availiable as well as very nice doubles and twins with shared bathrooms. The hostel is very safe with code access to get into the building and therefore no curfew.

Bathrooms are equally modern, clean, and well maintained. They have good hot showers and fancy lights that turn on as you walk in the room. A large, well-equipped kitchen has communal spices and condiments and baskets for every guest to keep their food away from prying fingers. It also has proper tables and chairs and free tea and coffee are provided.

A nice comfortable lounge with cable TV and a large selection of free DVDs gives the hostel a very homey feel and people all sit around together. It is not really a party hostel but is a place to meet other people. It is a nice refuge from the hoards of travellers on the many buses (e.g. Kiwi Experience and Magic) that are carted into other hostels.

The manager is very friendly and has honest recommendations. She is particularly good at recommending cheap jugs in Dunedin! Facilities also include free calls for local numbers, luggage storage, and washing machines. A good, safe refuge after a hard day of museums and sightseeing!

Unfriendly! Manager uncaring! Poor service!
I stayed here with three kiwi's. As soon as we checked in the Manager asked where we were from, when I told him that my companions were from New Zealand he was hostile towards us. There was also a cock up with the beds when we arrived back later on in the evening. We tried complaining the next day to him, he was uninterested in what we had to say he was rude and walked off in mid conversation. Thankfully and the only good thing to come out of it was our refund for the second night. We soon booked elsewhere at a fantastic hostel! I would not recommend this hostel to anyone.

Not impressed
If you don't mind a cat crawling over the cutlery and dishes (and everywhere else in the kitchen), then you'll be perfectly happy with this place. Also, it was extremely cold in the rooms. We visited in June, no heaters were provided in the bedrooms. I wouldn't recommend this hostel and would look elsewhere next time.

Great, clean, nice, cheap. What else do you need?

Great hostel, shame about the change of owner. if you're looking for a nice bed and comfy surroundings it's fine. but if you're looking for kiwi hospitality go elsewhere. I have been coming to NZ for four years on and off now -- always stayed here. and the previous owners were a young energetic couple, always friendly, good for a laugh. this new guy seems to just hang round like a bad smell, though the cat is cool. Don't make my opinion put you off but try to get this guy laughing, it's impossible, what a drip. definitely not a testament to kiwi hospitality.

Really nice peaceful hostel with comfortable rooms. Great location too. My only quibble -- there could be more toilets! But besides that it was a really good place to stay.
