The Hostelz.com Review

Lagan Backpackers provides basic hostel accommodation in Belfast without frills. It is neither fancy nor overly social, but it does offer a cheap bed in a good location. It also has great Wi-Fi and, best of all, offers guests a daily full (albeit small) cooked English breakfast for free!

The Location

Lagan is a small hostel in a great location on Fitzroy Avenue. Conveniently, it is only a couple of minutes' walk away from Botanic Avenue, which is known for its great range of (reasonably priced) pubs, bars, and restaurants. It is also only a short, twenty-minute walk to Belfast's city centre, minutes away from the River Lagan, and only seven minutes' walk to the nearby Botanic train station. For those driving, there is free parking on the street just outside the hostel.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Lagan offers guests the choice to either book a private room or a bed in one of its dorm rooms, which range in size from four to twelve beds. The bedrooms are tight, but sufficiently sized. They are clean, but not spotless. The dorm bunk beds are solid and secure and also have the added bonus of each having their own individual, ceiling-high, curtains that will block out the light from the rest of the room and generally just provide an added level of coziness. The mattresses are unfortunately quite springy.

The hostel has three toilets and three showers. It also has a couple of extra sinks on the first floor. While the shower on the ground floor is nice and hot and has great pressure, unfortunately the same cannot be said for the two on the first floor. These showers appear to only give out a trickle of lukewarm/cold water, though they may be better if you get in early enough in the day. Again, the bathrooms are generally kept clean but not spotless, and could probably do with a bit of maintenance work as well.

Common Spaces

Lagan has a living room with enough couch space to fit about eight to ten people. This common area has a small TV and a projector and appears to be mostly used as a general hang-out space that is not really ideal for socialising. The hostel also has a small but fully equipped kitchen and a dining area for eating meals. The free full English breakfast is served daily in the kitchen from 8 to 10 a.m. and free tea and coffee are available throughout the day. The hostel also advertises a free BBQ every night at 8 p.m., but the staff explained to us that this actually only happens when the hostel is busy. The hostel also has a small outdoor area that is mostly used by smokers.

Summary

Lagan Backpackers is a hostel of contrasts. On the one hand it is in a great location, has decent rooms, great Wi-Fi and offers guests a free full English breakfast daily. On the other hand, the staff on rotation appear to be mostly backpackers that are passing through Belfast. As a result, the quality of service that guests are likely to receive is akin to a game of roulette. Having a shower here is also a game of chance -- if you're lucky you will get the one with great pressure and hot water, but otherwise you will be left out in the cold!

Fun!
Excellent place. Manager very helpful, as were staff. They openly encourage you to get to know other guests by putting on dinner themselves & games (drink if you want, no pressure) in the common area. A huge array of DVDs & a projector for movie nights. We were only passing through for 1 night but had loads of fun!

So much fun!
I was travelling by myself, and only staying one night. The hostel was so easy to book. When I got there, the neighbourhood was amazing, and pretty, and felt very safe. The hostel is very clean (you see staff cleaning all the time), comfortable and cozy. As soon as you check in, the staff gives you a city map, and highlights what to see, and what not to waste money on! The owner set up an evening bbq with the sole purpose of hostelers meeting each other. I thought that was amazing. He even hung out with us! All and all, an amazing hostel -- the best I've ever stayed at for sure!!!
