The Stayokay Texel is a small hostel in a thatched-roof building amidst sheep pastures. The hostel is very well kept, with a dining room, small library, play-yard for children (many young Dutch families come here) and a bar where you can sample beer from the Texelse brewery. Dorm rooms are very basic, but clean and peaceful.
Few backpackers make it to Texel Island and it's much to their loss, at least for anyone who appreciates fresh ocean air, pastoral landscapes, and charming villages. This is an ideal place for a quiet reprieve if you've been visiting big cities. When on Texel you'll want to spend most of your time outdoors, though, and fortunately the hostel has a full shed of bikes for rent. You can bike into the nearest village (Den Burg), then carry on across the island to De Koog to visit Ecomare, a refuge for seals rescued from the North Sea. Behind Ecomare there are signposted hiking trails through the dunes, and many kilometers of sand beach to relax on.
The public transit schedules on the island do leave something to be desired, so ensure that you allow lots of time for getting to the hostel. After taking the ferry from Den Helder to 't Horntje, wait for a #29 bus, which may take up to an hour to appear. Taxis are another option. However you make it to the Stayokay Texel, the journey will be well worth it.
