Description
Sneek bustles with activity, and not only during Sneekweek, the country's largest sailing event. The historic city centre offers shopping, outdoor cafés and bars. Around Sneek you'll find charming villages, such as Stavoren along the IJssel lake. If you enjoy culture, don't miss the Jopie Huisman Museum in Workum. In Franeker you can visit the Eise Eisinga planetarium. For a bit of a spooky but very interesting excursion, see the world-renowned mummies of Wieuwerd. Or try ‘wadlopen' – crossing the Wadden at low tide.

Fairly formal, but pleasant enough hostel on the edge of town (about one kilometer out). Sneek is well off the backpacker circuit, so you can expect to meet a very Dutch crowd of cyclists (like myself) or boaty types, rather than the typical backpackers. Sneek is in the centre of Netherlands' lake district, and will be very busy during Sneek Week in August -- Netherlands' big regatta event. I was here in late September during a quiet season and was lucky enough to get a attic room to myself. Downstairs there was a big social area with a lively bar (Sneek has perhaps not the most exciting nightlife in Netherlands), which is a good place to have a beer at the end of the day. — Jim H (2007-02-18)
