The Hostelz.com Review
Downhill Hostel, located in Coleraine, sits directly overlooking the beach. The views from the hostel are absolutely amazing and quite breathtaking. It looks like something out of a book and you can't believe you are staying in such a fabulous place. The hostel is located in a very small village; there are no pubs or stores within a short walking distance. But it offers a quiet place to lay your head and the opportunity to take in some of the most amazing, unspoiled scenery in Northern Ireland.

Downhill is run by William and McCall Gilfillian, a charming couple who also call the hostel home. The rooms are all bright and spacious. The hostel is very inviting and the couple welcomes every guest as if they were long lost friends. The kitchen provides ample space to cook and the dining room, which also doubles as a display space for McCall's pottery, provides plenty of space to eat, converse, and take in the view of the ocean. The parlor offers cushy couches and plenty of reading material, from books to magazines. There is also a cozy fireplace and a variety of records, cds and different types of music to listen to and enjoy. You may even catch a glimpse of Atticus, the hostel's resident cat.

The bedrooms are spacious with very comfortable beds. The dorms have only six beds each, which makes for quiet sleeping quarters at an affordable price. All linens and comforters are provided. The bathrooms are great and the water pressure and showers are some of the best you will find on the road. The hostel provides laundry service for a nominal fee.

The hostel is located on the bus line. Check with McCall or William for a time table. The train station is located a short bus or cab ride away in Castlerock. The train actually runs adjacent to the hostel, so if you come in on the train from Derry, you will have the opportunity to see the hostel. There aren't many buses in or out on Sundays, so plan accordingly.

The beach provides a quiet place to read and reflect and also place to surf. The hostel does rent surfing equipment. They can also set up horseback riding as well. You can even paint your own pottery in McCall's studio, Element's Pottery. McCall also has various pieces for sell at the hostel.

The Mussenden Temple is located on the hill above the hostel and you can explore the area. It is just a short walk from the hostel. You can easily visit the Giants Causeway and Dunluce Castle. Both are just a short bus ride from the hostel. Castlerock provides a few stores for purchasing groceries and a library with internet access for a fee.

Although off the beaten path, the Downhill Hostel is an excellent place and a great value for your traveling dollar. The hospitality you will find here is second to none!

5  I was backpacking through ireland and I was lucky enough to hear about the downhill hostel. It is out of some fantasy of which I have never had the privilege of experiencing untill i came upon that big white house overlooking the ocean.  ()
5  This was by far the best hostel I have ever stayed at! We liked it so much we changed our schedule and stayed for three nights instead of one. McCall and WIlliam are very friendly, and so were the two staff members that were working there last summer (2005). We loved the beach and the views. If you need a break from the regular travelling activities, take an hour and paint some pottery with McCall. While we were here, we enjoyed visiting the Giant's Causeway and the Cerrick-a-Rede rope bridge.  ()
5  It's been quite a while now since I was here, November 2002, to be precise, but I have nothing but fond memories of this place (and great pictures). It has a lovely setting, tranquil and close to nature. Nice and friendly hosts, too (no, they are not intrusive). It's well worth visiting! The beach is awesome and the dorms are clean and tidy. Indoors or outdoors, I give it full marks!  ()
5  This place was awesome! It's right on the beach, and it's very peaceful. I stayed here for five days because it was so nice. The showers were hot and powerful! The reception is good, and you can really relax! It's a great place for singles and families alike.  ()
5  A beautiful, welcoming place to stay. I planned on staying for only a night, and extended to a week, because it was just too incredible to pass up! It was overall very clean, friendly, and comfortable! I would recommend it to anyone!  ()
