HI - Traenlaur Lodge, Co Mayo Hostel, originally a fishing lodge dating from the nineteenth century, is an idyllic escape for anyone seeking true isolation at the scenic shores of Lake Feeagh. Small and quiet, this lodge resembles more a home than hostel.
The Location
A nature lovers' retreat, this hostel is insulated by mountain and lake, accessible by narrow road -- driving is a must. Traenlaur Lodge is located seventeen kilometers north of Westport, offering inexpensive accommodation on the way to Achill Island. Getting there is simple enough, but a keen eye is the trick to spot the YHA sign. Once spotted, travelers should not be discouraged, as it is a windy eight-kilometer drive inward from the main road. Parking below the house near the lake is best -- enter via the main lawn. There, the longtime caretaker will welcome, situate, and let you be. It's beautiful, serene, and remote.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Dorm rooms are mixed-sex, small, and comfortable with an in-room sink. Beds are double bunks, clean and comfortable. Linens cost extra. Bathrooms are shared, and limited to two for the entire hostel. The showers are cramped and dirty, with poorly installed fiberglass chambers with low pressure, while the toilets are functional.
Common Spaces
What's special about this hostel? The front lawn looking down toward the lake! There is no television, no internet, no computer, no nothing. However, the reading room is comfortable with a piano, while the self-catering kitchen is manageable. Cookware is rough, while dishware is acceptable. There are working stove tops and refrigerator space. Meeting other guests is rare, since they are few and far between. This hostel does not feel so welcoming, as it is rather drab and shabby chic at best.

The worst place in the world The manager gave us directions to arrive there but it was impossible and we called here at least twice to ask her how to arrive. We couldn't find the place and when we arrived, nearly twelve at night she told us to go away. And she said to us: F*** off, so. Do you think that it's a good place to sleep, it's in the middle of nothing, and the manager is very impolite and a very bad person, because we had to go away from the hostel very late at night. — Raquel , Basque Country (2008-07-30)
