The Hostelz.com Review
The Cat's Pyjamas hostel is the place to stay in Whitianga if you want a fun atmosphere close to all the action of the town -- it's located on Monk Street, right near town center. When you first approach the hostel you see the brightly painted yellow walls. There are always people sitting on the front porch relaxing or basking in the sun. Inside the hostel, there is an airy beach atmosphere. You can walk to the water from the hostel.
Inside the hostel, there is plenty of space to relax or hang out with fellow travellers. There is a spacious living room with plenty of comfortable couches. There is also a television, VCR, and plenty of movies. The kitchen, which is adjacent to the dining room, is fully stocked with all the dishes you may need. There is a full-sized refrigerator, and plenty of cupboard space. There are also other rooms within the hostel where you can relax at a table, reading one of the many books from the hostel library. The bathrooms within the hostel are all very clean -- they're unisex and have individual rooms for toilets and showers. The hostel also offers internet access at a moderate price.
The crowd of people are very social and upbeat. You will always find someone who is willing to talk about their travels at this hostel. If you want a quiet night, you can go into your room and go to sleep with relative peace and quiet, but if you want to stay up late partying, just head out into the living room.

I stayed in this hostel in March 2007, two days before it was to close down, which may explain why i found it to be dirty. This is a shame as you can see that it was once cosy and the owner was very helpful. — Gillian , Belfast (2007-05-23)

Buster was a legend! we stopped for one night in the tent in the garden, had a great time. well worth a stop over before the hostel is no more! Joplin and Mr Darcey (cats) are gorgeous! — Tara (2007-01-26)

One of the friendliest hostels I stayed at anywhere. Big common room has plenty of board games, movies to watch, and cozy couches. Breakfast room is great. The owners were super-friendly and went out of their way to make sure everyone was having a good time. The only drawback was that this hostel is located in town, when most people go to Whitianga to be on the beach. Aside from that, this is a nice place to stay to meet people and just chill out. — Sarah (2006-07-09)

What a shame that this hostel is being knocked down to make way for more shops. This is a truly lovely hostel with hosts that feel more like parents than landlords. The hostel is in a great location with plenty of parking available. There are plenty of rooms(dorms-doubles) and a number of bathrooms so there is no queing on a morning. The hostel has a large kitchen and communal area which can get quite busy at times, so either eat early or late to avoid the madness! — S+D- A great relaxing place (2006-01-19)

What a lovely hostel, the friendliest staff and a real home from home. I can strongly recommend finding two other people to go up and fly with Buster. I took the Go Kiwi bus tour over to Hot Water Beach and Cathedral Cove in the day and then flew over the same route at sunset, one of my best days in New Zealand! — James (2005-07-06)
