The Hostelz.com Review
The location is convenient enough, being under 10 minutes from the train station and just down the block from a market. It's another 10-minute walk to the city center. There are keys for 24 hour access and luggage storage for after you check out (9am!). The place seems a bit like an old hotel, the key word being old, with no real common room. The owners can be helpful when they want to be, though I'm pretty sure they like making fun of some guests in Croatian while they were checking in.

The largest dorms in this HI hostel have 6 beds, which are functional but not the most comfortable. Bathrooms are mostly clean, though run down. It has five floors, but there is an elevator. All rooms are single-sex. There's no breakfast. This hostel is relatively cheap and in a good location, but it's probably never been called "nice." It makes you want to go out and see the city. Safety is not an issue however, Zagreb is very safe.

This one is a dump.
This is one of the worst HI hostels that I've stayed at. You shower in a puddle because the drains don't work well. The bathrooms are dirty and have not been adequately maintained. The mattresses are old and dirty. The are no curtains on the windows -- so no privacy from your neighbors across the street, and the street light shines into the room. Find somewhere else to stay.

The worst hostel we stayed in on our three-week trip.
Very convenient for the railway station and the centre of Zagreb but that is it's best feature! They would only take Croatian cash despite the HI web site saying they take credit cards. We stayed in a double room which was noisy and the shower room was dirty with rotting wood and a rusty shower. The shower room door would not close without extreme effort. Would not stay here again.

This hostel was sh*t. The man at the desk was not very friendly and seemed to hate his job. The room was ugly and a bit dirty, but the worst were the bathrooms. The showers were horrible and the toilets -- well, I prefered to go toilets in the city. We were happy to stay only one night there, this was really enough. Anyway, I wonder why we did not get any reduction with our IYHF card. Never, never go to this place if you want to enjoy your stay.

Can't comment on the dorm rooms but my mate and I got a two bedded room with ensuite and it was clean, comfortable, and reasonably priced if you compare it with local hotels. Yes the staff were a little uninterested -- but did you go there to make friends?

I went to this hostel a couple of years ago because I had some people coming that needed accommodation for one night before we together went on a trip to the east. First I encountered the guy at the reception who fitted nicely in the decor of the place. It was actually just like a time machine into the wildest and roughest days of communism. He was rude, and place looked old and warn out. But I decided to give it a chance and go and take a look at the rooms. After I inspected the facilities, and almost threw up because they were beyond disgusting, I wowed never to come back. This hostel is a shame for Zagreb and Croatia, and I really felt bad for the people who came to stay there not knowing what they're getting themselves into. I went to the HI Zagreb to find out what's going on there because I know they've been planning to completely renovate it for years now, and I've been told that there are problems with the legal issues of ownership over the building (typically Croatian!). I told them that it's better to close it than to keep it running, because I wouldn't let my dog stay in a place like that. But they obviously don't have any problems with taking money for that sh*t hole. Anyways, since then, I've managed to rescue dozens of people by booking other Zagreb hostels for them -- fortunately there are a couple of really nice and centrally located places, and that's what I really recommend doing.

The staff was kind enough to let us use the showers for free, but man, what a disgusting bathroom. It had been three days of dirty camping and no showers, and after seeing the state of the bathroom I was tempted to make it four. Didn't actually stay here -- I feel sorry for those that did. Shower clogged up very quickly. Really close to the train station though.

I am from bangladesh, was travelling all over europe and then came to croatia. I was brought here by a croatian friend. The first look I had of the builiding it looked like a former KGB headquarters or more like Milosovic's tormentation center. I hated it.

This hostel had the most brutal staff I've come across travelling around europe. They didn't seem to look upon us as paying customers. They made it clear that they wouldnt answer any enquiries about the city and were only interested in getting money off us. I spent around five nights at this hostel and although I shared the toilets with trillions of bacteria and the shower spat cold water at me -- I strangely enjoyed my time there. The beds were comfortable and the rooms were clean. There was plenty of space to put all your luggage and the location within the city was ideal. All in all this hostel is comfortable. When the choice in Zagreb for hostels is as shockingly low as it is -- this place does just nicely.

this hostel was a shocker, absolutely no facilities....like none, no common room, tv room or kitchen, nothing....but it does come with free grotty showers that block up, it was pretty rough but the guy on the front desk was friendly and helpful enough to me,this place does fill up due to the lack of hostels in zabgreb (supply demand, why make it flash!!) want a business idea?? set up a hostel in central zagreb that is slightly better than a mental institution and you will make a killing. i did however stay 2 nights and survived.

Shittiest hostel ever. There are many other delicious phrases scrawled under each bunk bed that fantastically describe this hellhole. It's a pleasure to go to bed and wonder just how bad the experiences other people have had here, and to think that you are not the only one. Why it's an HI I'll never know. I had my mobile phone stolen from my jeans while I was asleep. The cops around the corner said that they'd had quite a few backpackers coming in and complaining about the same thing. The guys downstairs are arseholes. The city, though...I can't speak of it highly enough!!! It's definitely worth checking out. And the last time I went back I stayed in another hostel, which was an absolute pleasure. Good luck. You'll love Zagreb.

Having stayed at hostels all over the world — some in Kenya without electricity for hours at a time — this takes the crown for the world's WORST ever hostel (or best prison). I have never encountered such rude and unfriendly staff in conjunction with the rundown sh*t hole calling itself a hostel. Three reasons to stay here: 1. Good location 2. Graffiti as guest book motif 3. You are a sick person who likes to torture himself or herself I didn't expect a hotel but this is just silly. I was going to stay for four nights but after the first night, when I was told that I only wanted things better because I was English and didn't understand other countries, I left for the other hostel in Zagreb — a delight!

To say the least, Zagreb is a fabulous city. Full of history and museums and wonderful Baroque architecture. The country is the model of a nation that has recovered tremendously; however, one night in this hostel might lead you to believe you may have stepped back in time when the city was under siege. This hellhole is a showcase of all that is wrong was wrong with Croatia. Perhaps it would make for a good museum of what life was like during the Homeland War of the 1990s, but staying there overnight might lead one to suicide as the graffiti adorning the walls and undersides of the bunks attests to the trauma of previous hostelers. Such opining may lead you to believe that this place once served as a mental institution where its derelict populace was allowed to run rampant and scribble their madness wherever. The inextinguishable odor of stale urine will help your imagination along the way to believing that you have been institutionalized. I'm not sure what is more disturbing, let alone insulting...that the pubic hairs of hormonally imbalanced Balkan teenyboppers remain on the otherwise bleached-white sheets years after coitus or that when-examining-in-your-fatigue-of-not-having-slept-for-more-than-48-hours-feeling that you just overpaid for a night of trauma. I don't know. All I could say to myself is, "My only regret is that I arrived too late to partake of the two bars just outside the hostel to drink myself into oblivion." Maybe that way I would have slipped from consciousness on the way back from the bars to the hostel and then been arrested and placed in the Zagreb drunk tank. The one thing that I don't agree with is that the man at the desk was a jerk. In fact, the person at the desk, albeit elderly, was a quite congenial. Maybe the other guy died and they threw his corpse in the janitor's closet. That would definitely explain that other smell.

A bad hostel! I stayed here twice, the second time out of desperation. This place has got a Soviet hospital vibe to it. The staff do not know the meaning of customer service. They are funny — wait in reception for a while and you are guaranteed some hilarious "Fawlty Towers"-esque scenes between guests and staff. On the plus side it is only a ten-minute walk to the center of town. And because there are some important government buildings across the road from this hostel there is a 24-hour armed patrol. So it is a relatively safe hostel.

Excellent situation!!! But if you go to Zagreb by bus be prepared for a long walk. For us walking was just ok because we had traveled 11 hours by bus. The rooms and beds are ok. The showers and toilets are not, use them with blinded eyes. If you stay only for one night this is good option.

The guidebook that listed this hostel said that war refugees had stayed here during the war. The same desperate aura is still palpable. We had planned to stay for a few nights, but after one sleepless, bug-covered night we left. Zagreb is a great city, but find any other accommodation possible.
