The Hostelz.com Review
Situated on King's Road, along with many other hostels, Pipi-patch is in an ideal location for exploring Pahia and the other areas of the Bay of Islands. All of the major "Backpacker Buses" (e.g. Kiwi Experience, Magic, Stray) will drop off and pick-up from here, and the public buses stop just a short walk away.
The dorms are very clean and are arranged in a motel-style layout with entry from outside. Each dorm has its own ensuite bathroom and small kitchen area with a fridge and kettle in which you can store food and make tea/coffee but not prepare and cook meals. There is a communal kitchen downstairs which was clean and tidy but lacked an adequate amount of pans and utensils. Other communal areas were very good - a comfy lounge area with sofas and Sky TV, an outside patio area with tables and benches and a popular bar. Each night, a cheap BBQ meal was available (including beer) and seemed a popular choice.
Nearby, there is a lot to do. There are several bars aimed at the backpacker market and the beach is just a 2 minute walk. Should you choose to do one of the many excursions availble in the area, Pipi Patch reception will happily book it for you and most trips will pick you up from the hostel and drop you off again afterwards. The ferry to Russel is just a 20-minute walk away and there is a large supermarket about 30-minutes walk for those that want to self-cater.
This hostel seemed very popular and because of this tended to be a bit noisy at times - especially the dorms closest to the bar-area. However, it is popular for a good reason and is a great place to stay.

Great Vibe, Helpful Friendly Staff, Great Bar, Great BBQ, and Awesome place. Best suited for young travelers. — chanelle (2007-03-20)
Dangerous beds! Full of bedbugs. Not happy! — Mac (2006-12-19)
Didn't liked it too much. Really the hostel where Stray and Kiwi experience drop off their customers. — Kris (2006-07-21)

Pipi Patch is awesome!!! Such an awesome atmosphere to this hostel. It's in a very good location too, by the water, near some good pubs. The staff here are friendly and helpful. I ended up staying here for two months in stead of three days. Great 7 p.m. barbecue they offer as well. Cheers!!! — Adam (2005-07-15)

I stayed in a dorm and I found the rooms to be too small and cramped. It also seemed like too much of a party hostel to me. If you want relaxation this is not the place to stay. — Anonymous (2005-03-26)

I stayed here for three nights and it was okay. It is very friendly and the bar is great; however, it is swamped with people from the backpacker buses who all know each other and tend to dominate. As a result the staff are not that friendly and the communal kitchens are badly looked after and stocked. There was one hob working in the entire kitchen. The pool is the size of a jellybean. Stay somewhere else and visit the bar. — Clare (2005-01-16)

I only stayed in this hostel two nights (I think it was this one!) but it was fun. The bar is crazy and there are loads of travelers to meet. The reception desk closes early, though, and I'd recommend more comfy chairs in the TV area. But — I'd recommend it! — Lydia (2004-12-09)

Hey, I didn't know this site was available. I was at the Pipi Patch Lodge in late February 2004. I reckon it was the best hostel of all of them. I had a damn fine time here. It's a great place with great pubs — tiptop!!! — Anonymous (2004-10-18)
