The Hostelz.com Review
Mousetrap Backpackers is a wonderfully cozy, clean, and friendly hostel, where younger and more mature backpackers meet and mix well. We felt as if we were staying at somebody's home, where we were very welcome.
The Location
Like most other hostels, the Mousetrap is located on Kings Road. It's the building with the giant mouse on the roof on the right hand side. From the bus and ferry terminal, it is only a few minutes' walk. Parking is available in front of the hostel. A small grocery is just down the street, but it is so overpriced and unfriendly that it is definitely worth using one of the free bicycles from the hostel to cycle down to the supermarket.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The bathrooms are rather small but have the essential fittings and are clean. The rooms too are clean and tidy, because guests in dorms are expected to keep their stuff in the large lockers in the room or on their beds so that they can be vacuumed daily. Private rooms are available too.
Common Spaces
The Mousetrap is like an old villa with doors, rooms, and stairs everywhere. On the ground floor is the reception and public computers; on the other floors are bedrooms and three kitchens with living rooms. One is furnished like on a boat, one has a TV, and in an other one you find books and some games. Further there is a terrace and a covered garden dining area. All the public areas are individually decorated with great attention to details and a tasteful and only slightly tacky collection of all kinds of stuff.
Even though it calls itself a "quiet hostel" and no noise is tolerated in the two top living rooms after 11 p.m., we met many friendly and sociable people. The owner himself is very nice too and eager to help out with information on the surroundings and possible discounts for trips and tours.
Summary
If you want to party, go next door, but if you like to enjoy great hospitality and a friendly atmosphere at a very reasonable price (but bring cash, there is a charge for using credit cards), you should definitely stay at the Mousetrap.

Hostelz.com Guest Reviews

Wonderful -- Highly recommended. I booked a double room for three nights initially but stayed an extra two. The hostel was full but the lovely owners (Jake and Nikki) gave us the option of a room in a gorgeous house they rent out a few minutes up the road. The facilities in the hostel itself are top notch. Very warm, welcoming, homey environment with all that you need. Perfect location and great rates. — Paula , Ireland (2008-02-23)

It is emphasized when you arrive that this is a quiet hostel, not a party hostel and this is reinforced at 11 p.m. each night, perhaps a little too much. The balconies and lounges are nice, but the kitchens are small. The bathrooms need renovated, the toilet cubicles are very small and there is a lot of space wasted in the room with the hand-basins. The sign requesting quick showers wasn't appreciated, especially as the shower-rooms did not encourage lengthy showers. All tours can be booked at reception and there were several computers. There are nice outdoor areas. — Gillian , Belfast (2007-05-23)

Best place we stayed in a yearlong trip! Minimal rules, quiet areas and not so quiet areas, barbecues, and friendly staff. I would give this place 6 stars!! — TH (2005-04-22)

I had the best time of my life here. You can party if you want to, or relax if you want to. There are great people here, and lots of stuff to do. The skydiving is excellent. — Uncle Eddy (2004-11-29)

This is a great place to bum around. It has nice people, and it's very cozy. — B. Rion (2004-09-14)

A lovely quaint hostel. This place has really friendly owners, it's close to a dairy and bars, and it's within walking distance to town and all the water activities. There's a nice beach just down the road. The balcony overlooks the Pacific. It has good services, and it's very clean. — Tiffany (2004-06-10)

Real homely hostel - lots of plants, sea views minutes away from everything - came here to do the Rock Overnight cruise - superb. — Debbie Black- UK (2003-10-26)
