The Hostelz.com Review
Rimu Park Lodge is a bit of a walk from town, but is a good location for outdoor activities in the area. It is rustic and cosy, but with modern conveniences and appliances. It is a great place to relax or start your outdoor adventures.
The Location
It is about a thirty-minute walk from the town of Ohakune and from the coach bus stops. Simply follow Miro Street from Clyde Street for awhile, and when the road forks at Rimu Road, go right it will be just a few steps away. It is in Ohakune Junction (which is made up mostly of lodges, cafes, and restaurants/bars), which comes alive in winter but is pretty dead in summer. There is plenty of parking available, and it is a good location for skiing in the winter and tramping in the summer.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The rooms range from multi-share rooms with six beds to private apartments. The doors lock securely, but there are no in-room lockers available. The beds are very comfortable, but duvets are not included (you can hire one if you need to). The rooms seem to only be heated in the winter, which means that they can get quite cold on those days where it is cold but not winter.
There are only two bathrooms available in the backpackers unit, which can get problematic in winter but is a non-issue in the off-season. The showers are warm with good water pressure, and there is plenty of space available for changing and hanging your things. There is one toilet that is in the same room as the shower, and one that is separate. The one that is separate does not have a sink for washing your hands, which is a bit inconvenient, but not that much of a problem.
Common Spaces
There is a large common room, with four comfortable couches and a few pillows and blankets. The modern TV has cable, and there are also several movies available. There are a few board games and a small book exchange as well. There is a computer with free internet, but it is only for checking emails and such -- no downloading or Skype. There are also some benches and tables outside for days with good weather.
The kitchen is very large, with two tables for eating and plenty of space for cooking. They only have one of each appliance (except there are two fridges) which may be difficult in winter, but it isn't a problem in the off-season. The appliances are modern, but the area has an old, rural charm to it.
Since the hostel is quite isolated, the people staying there are very social. There isn't much partying, but people are usually up for talking or watching a movie. When it is more crowded (in winter), it is always full, so it may be a bit rowdier, but it still isn't a party hostel. Having said that, it's still very nice and social, just in a more subdued way.
Summary
This hostel is a bit cold and quiet in the off-season, but still social and comfortable and good for tramping or visiting the Tongariro Crossing, and is much more full and lively in the winter, where it is a good base for skiing and other winter sports. Overall, it is a well-priced, comfortable hostel if you don't mind being a bit of a walk from town.

Great Really great place to stay. Good service. The owner is there and available at any time if theres a problem. Very friendly atmosphere. And they provide breakfast. Nothing flash, but it's provided. — Vickie , NZ-States (2008-07-21)
