The Hostelz.com Review
Tobermory Youth Hostel is found on Main Street in Tobermory, the "capital" of the Isle of Mull. It is painted pink so it is difficult to miss – although many nearby buildings are also painted suitably garish colours as well and have become a tourist attraction in their own right.
The rooms in the hostel are large and although a little rundown it is kept fairly clean. The bunkbeds are comfortable and the lounge area has a TV, plenty of seating, and tourist material. The bathrooms are even more rundown – hot water should not be a problem, although water pressure can be a little unreliable.
One small complaint is that check-in does not start until 5 – although luggage can be left there until then. Overbooking is a terrible practice and whilst mistakes do happen, overbooking in a hostel which has only 39 beds and only opens check in at 5 it is even more worrisome.
Tobermory is a small town, but there is a well stocked supermarket nearby (the Co-op) and some specialty shops selling chocolates and other delicacies. The nearby pubs may not be too welcoming of "incomers" at first but after a few drinks and a little singing, the atmosphere becomes almost friendly.
By public transport, getting to Tobermory can be tiring. Local (and very expensive) local buses meet ferries when they arrive into Craignure and travel up to Tobermory. There are limited other buses during the day to other parts of Mull – and travelling to Fionnphort and the Isle of Iona can take virtually a whole day because of the bus timetable.

I'd have to say the dorm I stayed in was not spacious at all. I thought it was quite cramped and the bed was terrible, one of those saggy metal bunk beds that sways and creaks whenever either occupant moves. Great location, good kitchen, and friendly staff, though. — Eoin (2005-06-13)

Quiet, cozy hostel right on the main street alongside the harbor. The front rooms have great sea views. There are some excellent shops close by — try the Island Bakery for local cheeses and baked goodies, and the Co-op supermarket is well stocked for self caterers. There are numerous restaurants around. The hostel has a spacious, well equipped kitchen, dining room and lounge, outdoor patio area (if it ever stops raining) and spacious dorms. I had the dorm to myself, as it was a quiet time. This is a small hostel and attracts walkers and cyclists, and is ideal for those looking for a quiet break that is accessible by public transport. — Vicki (2004-12-31)

This is a small cozy hostel on the main street in Tobermory and has the advantage of being accessible by public transport. Main Street runs along the harbor and is packed with colorful buildings. There were some wonderful shops nearby for self-caterers and plenty of eating out options. I was one of few guests there and I had the six-bed dorm to myself. The other guests were a group of cyclists — apparently. I never actually saw them. However, I really enjoyed the break in a beautiful place and I liked the hostel — very homely and comfortable. The self-catering kitchen and dining room was well equipped and the lounge was comfortable, both offering great views. For a night or two, this is a good place to relax. — Vicki (2004-12-07)
