The Hostelz.com Review
BASE Christchurch is centrally located, with lots of young people, a bar which offer meals and drinks at night. It's perfect for people looking for a party.

The Location

The hostel has an excellent location -- just in front of the Cathedral and a hundred meters away from the bus stop. It's next to an ice bar, gift shops, markets, and fast food shops and just a five-minute walk to the incredible Botanical Gardens and Arts Centre.

Rooms and Bathrooms

We stayed in the famous "Sanctuary" area, a place with only female dorms. Mattresses are excellent and under each bunk bed there are two big lockers enough to put a bag and other stuff. Bedrooms have a fridge (in our case, it didn't work properly), but there is no individual reading light for each bed, so you'd better have a torchlight or something if you decide to go to bed later than the rest of your roommates. At check-in, you'll receive a towel and shampoo for free if you are staying in the sanctuary, as well as a free drink in the bar.

To get to this area you'll first have to open a door that will lead you into a corridor and area exclusively for women. That means bathrooms and couches there are just for females (it is nice indeed being able to get out of the shower and to your room in a towel without worrying too much). Unluckily, bathrooms are a bit dirty and hair dryers don't work. There's liquid soap and paper towels in all bathrooms. Showers have hooks and some place to get changed.

Common Spaces

The kitchen is big and fully equipped. However, it is not very clean, especially at lunch and dinner time. There are lots of people (who don't seem to understand the use-and-wash-method) and the size of the kitchen doesn't seem enough for the amount of people there.
The dinning room is next to the kitchen, and you can choose either to stay inside or seat in the terrace.

There is a huge TV room next to some vending machines. Internet access is charged but you can just walk two blocks to the national library and have free Wi-Fi or internet access. Downstairs there is a bar ("Saints and Sinners") with breakfast options and meals if you don't feel like cooking in a dirty kitchen.

Summary

This place is suitable for young people who want to go out and don't care too much about places being clean. In fact, we met a person who was staying for just a few days and was doing housekeeping to get free accommodation. So it seems like there is no housekeeping staff in the hostel, which would explain the state of the kitchen and bathrooms. Reception is open twenty-four hours a day and a deposit is required for the dorm key.

4  Average Great location -- right on the main square. We stayed here in December 2008 in a 4-bed dorm, which was more spacious than others we have stayed in. Room was clean and secure. The place looks a bit like it could do with a facelift, but its not a major problem.  , England ()
4  Best location in Christchurch! A decent hostel with more atmosphere than the YHA we stayed in on our first trip to Christchurch (without being too loud). Decent sized rooms, plenty of PCs with good internet access. BASE are on the square so you couldn't be more central. Very clean. Would go back.  , England ()
4  I really enjoyed this hostel. It was much cleaner than base in Auckland and the rooms spacious and modern. Staff are friendly. I found the bar a really good place to meet people, because it's small and cosy, the music isnt ridiculously loud, and some of the local students drink there!  ()
4  Stayed for one night (a few hours!) before going on a campervan holiday. It was very handy that the check-in was twenty-four hours because out plane only landed at midnight. Shared a private double room with my friend, and it was clean with fresh towels and soap waiting on the bed. Showers were hot and had good pressure! The kitchen/common area was pretty messy, obviously from people who had just been there. I would definitely recommend it for anyone staying one to two nights in Christchurch.  ()
5  Wow! Stay in the little bit more expensive girls dorms and you'll never look back. Even though we only had one night -- arriving late and leaving early -- everything was great. The provided linens, including a big fluffy quilt, were clean and fresh, and complimentary cosmetics made it as good as a hotel. The bathrooms were clean, even late at night, and the showers great! The staff were helpful enough, although busy. They also have a nighclub in the same building, but we didn't have any problem with noise. We left for our flight the next morning, sorry we hadn't planned to stay in Christchurch longer!  ()
3  I was not impressed!!! The dorms were very cramped and the hostel is very noisy. That said, if you're an 18-year-old gap type it might suit you. I stayed two nights and was not too happy about the girl who brought her new boyfriend into the dorm for a s**g or the guy who peed all over the floor the following night!!! If you're a little past all those kinds of shenanigans, I'd stay at the YHA in Rolleston Road - that was fine and far more civilized!!!  ()
5  What a location, gorgeous bedroom and pleasant staff. Cool bar, too. Stay here.  ()
2  This place was ok, but when we arrived there were dirty plates and glasses, wrappers, beer cans and bits of people's food all over the floor of the TV room. The dorms were fine but a bit overpriced for what it was.  ()
5  Awesome hostel. The rooms are huge compared to most hostels. If you can, get to Base Magnetic Island as well for a Full Moon Party. It's like no other. The staff are the best I have ever come across. Emma is fantastic. So is Phil (the night guy). You can't go to Christchurch and not stay at Base.  ()
4  Yeah, the location is awesome, and the staff are as well. It was clean and I think the rooms are not too small. It's a very nice place to stay! (The pool competition was fun!)  ()
5  Fantastic! I really loved this hostel. I like Base hostels; they have a good feel about them. You meet so many people and the bar is great — we won $400 in a pub quiz. How awesome is that! It's located smack bang in the center of town as well. You couldn't ask for more!  ()
2  Not very impressed. The staff weren't very helpful or nice and the rooms and halls are tiny.  ()
3  Great location. The dorms were very clean, although a bit small. There's plenty of space to chill, but it's all on different floors, so it's not great for meeting people. The staff are quite friendly.  ()
