The Hostelz.com Review
Stonehurst has a little bit of everything to offer. Aparments, singles, and dorms. For $22NZ a 6-8 person dorm bed. The place is homey with a nice sitting area for reading or conversation, a small tv room, and tons of information avaliable for your trek around New Zealand. Internet is quite pricey and can be found in town for significanly cheaper.

The rooms are a little clastrophobic, in that there are 8 beds set up quite close together and not very sturdy. Be careful about moving around too much in your sleep you'll wake everyone else up. But they do provide linens which is a plus especially because Christchurch can get cold during parts of the year. The doors are secure and can only be accessed through a pin code and each room has key locks. There is a decent kitchen but also a refridgerator in the room for more convience.

The bathrooms are large, spacious, and clean. The only thing is they are coed which can make some people akward. They also provide hairdryers.

It's a few blocks from the centre of town but very easily walkable. Just be careful of the traffic patterns near the hostel. They can get a little confusing.

Pretty decent place
This was my fist experience in a hostel back in September 2005. The place was pretty much empty when I was there. It was nice enough -- pretty average as I found after experiencing other hostels. Beds were pretty comfortable. Christchurch is a cool city. Check out other places to stay -- nothing special at this hostel.

This place suited us to a T. We had a double en-suite room in the backpacker section, and it was quiet, comfortable beds, very clean bathroom. I love the fact the place was all made up with bedsheets, pillows, blankets, bedside tables, towels, soap, shelves, clothes hangers, mini fridge, television, and safe -- all for $75 a night for two of us. They had an emphasis on safety, but it was still very calm. Nice people at the front desk. The only weird thing is they didn't have a fridge in the otherwise well equipped kitchen, but then again there was one in our room. I would definitely stay here again. So simple, and good value.

I stayed here in Jan '06 and found it a great place to stay. The staff were helpful and booked my whale watching day trip to Kaikoura (which was brilliant). I stayed in a twin room and it had tv, fridge and a safe and was really spacious. I had no experience of bed bugs.

Warning! This place has bedbugs and ruined my holiday! Didn't get better when staff pretended I was imagining in spite of me bringing 2 dead bugs down to the reception.

Reputable place to stay. Enjoyed enough to stay here again later in my travels.

I stayed here for four days and had a great time. It was really clean and handy to the city. I met nearly all the staff and they were really cool. They were really busy at checkout time and in the late afternoon, but the rest of the time they always had time for a chat and a laugh. I highly recommend it, even with all the Aussie accents around the place!

Great place. I would recommend it to other travelers. Its location is great; it's just a very short walk from here into the center of the city. The facilities are clean, tidy, and everything a traveler could ask for. The beds are very comfortable and the room was excellent. The staff went out of their way to help, and nothing was ever too much trouble. You will not be disappointed — stay at Stonehurst.

Fantastic hostel. It has clean beds and clean showers. The hostel staff are helpful. They can help you book tours, and even order pizza for you at night. If you can put up with the British accents all around the place, I highly recommend this hostel.

Good hostel. The staff were great, just rushed off their feet. They need a separate area for the bar, as reception was too busy sometimes. Everything else was good.

The staff were rude and not well organised.

The staff are rude, especially one of the female staff who makes customers feel really uncomfortable. She should change her bad manner, or she shouldn't work here.

Although expensive for a backpackers, it is top-notch and well worth the stay.

Clean rooms, really friendly staff. I booked all my buses through here and got some great travel advice too!!! I stayed in a dorm with its own bathroom. The swimming pool is a bit small, but still a pool! I will be staying here again!

Nothing wrong with this place. Just fairly average.
