Stonehurst has a little bit of everything to offer. Aparments, singles, and dorms. For $22NZ a 6-8 person dorm bed. The place is homey with a nice sitting area for reading or conversation, a small tv room, and tons of information avaliable for your trek around New Zealand. Internet is quite pricey and can be found in town for significanly cheaper.
The rooms are a little clastrophobic, in that there are 8 beds set up quite close together and not very sturdy. Be careful about moving around too much in your sleep you'll wake everyone else up. But they do provide linens which is a plus especially because Christchurch can get cold during parts of the year. The doors are secure and can only be accessed through a pin code and each room has key locks. There is a decent kitchen but also a refridgerator in the room for more convience.
The bathrooms are large, spacious, and clean. The only thing is they are coed which can make some people akward. They also provide hairdryers.
It's a few blocks from the centre of town but very easily walkable. Just be careful of the traffic patterns near the hostel. They can get a little confusing.
