The Hostelz.com Review
HI - YHA St Briavel's Castle Hostel, a thirteenth century (dry) moated Norman castle used as a hunting lodge by King John, is not so far removed from civilization, though best accessed by car. Exceptional grounds and a cozy-friendly atmosphere created by staff and guest alike contribute to the well-being of all who stay. However, be warned as large school groups are common and booking in advanced is highly recommended.]

The Location

Lydney is a small village at the top of a large hill. St Briavel's is within the center of the village and its quiet lanes, across from an equally ancient church. St Briavel's is situated in the historically disputed boarder lands of Wales and England, which provides a good jumping point for exploration of the region (Royal Forest of Dean and Wye Valley). Easily accessible by car, the more daring cyclists also find their way here, if not by the skin of their teeth. Roads are narrow and traffic swift.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Dorm rooms are single-sex double-bunks, and are clean and well-lit though a little drab. Lockers in the rooms are small, shabbily converted cabinets, and do not fit standard sized Master locks, but smaller luggage locks. Shared bathrooms are clean and private shower rooms are adequate, hot water is good while pressure is erratic. At capacity, bath and shower rooms are a commodity as there are not enough. Rooms are secured by standard lock and key, though many guests simply leave doors unlocked. Rooms are not wheelchair accessible and guests may need to climb several flights of stairs. Every room carries a different theme, at least by name, and smaller private rooms are available.

Common Spaces

What makes this hostel special, besides being a castle, are its humble grounds. The courtyard within the castle walls is well maintained and grassy, perfect for a bit of frisbee or soccer, even an afternoon picnic or evening bottle of wine. Indoor spaces are pleasant with a couple of cozy reading lounges, as well as a classroom/television room. There is no internet or computer access. However, simply exploring the castle will reveal many curious areas, including ancient graffiti in the prison!

The dining area is comfortable, but cramped at capacity, while the self-catering kitchen is functional if you're taking turns with other guests. The cookware is rather beat-up but diningware is acceptable, while the appliances work well. There are refrigerators, but space is limited. Only one sink is available for food preparation and dishwashing. Everywhere in the hostel is a potential meeting place, but breakfast is where most chatter occurs. The free breakfast is a proper full English and has a bit of everything to satisfy the most discriminant guest to satisfaction -- it's good eating.

Summary

This is a beautiful yet modest castle-turned-hostel. Amenities are bone stock, but cozy enough. The small village is quiet, with a couple of small pubs within walking distance, and the hostel compliments the village well. There is little to do here, so bring your own activities as St Briavels is rather insulated from the rest of the world and provides a modest escape. Supermarkets are quite the drive, so stock up on supplies before you arrive.
