The Hostelz.com Review
Urban Hostel Deluxe is a cozy palapa-style place that always seems to be busy. The accommodations include your typical dorm-room and also individual private rooms. All come with free breakfast. The building is well-maintained and fairly clean, including a very basic kitchen with fridge, a washer and dryer, simple communal bathrooms, a nice living room with cable TV, and dining chairs and tables.
The atmosphere seems very chill, or "tranquilo" as they say in Mexico. This places draws a large variety of backpackers and travelers from all over the world, which fits the atmosphere of the town well. You can find all kinds of people here doing anything from classy romantic dinners to all-out partying on the beach.
The hostel is located a quick three blocks from the beach and the main strip along Playa del Carmen. To get there, walk two blocks away from the beach from the main bus terminal to Av. 10, and head up between 4 & 6 street. It's very easy to find.

Pretty good the hostel is actually not that bad. it might be not as clean as they say but if u need something they will give it to u. the staff is great. sometimes they took us out to this roadtrips. and the bedbugs appear when u go to the beach. then come back full of sand and lay in ur bed. it happened to me. then when the guy from the hostel explained to me then i realize it was me. been here for 7 months now. its worth enough. thinking that its gotta be the cheapest place around. — Travis , Canada (2011-06-12)

Best place in Playa It's not the cleanest hostel, but I never saw a single bug in the two weeks I stayed there. The kitchen was not as bad as they make it sound, we actually cooked there and it was fine. The place was nice and cozy and the staff was incredible, always friendly and happy to make you smile. They all treat you like family and make you feel at home. I definitely recommend it, and if I ever return to Playa I wouldn't doubt where to stay. — Anonymous , Argentina (2011-02-01)

Best partying with basic accommodation UH is not the cleanest hostel in town, but definitely the best place to chill out in Playa. You probably wont like it if your not a social person. Dont stay there if your looking for 5 star services. its a hostel -- its cheap, its a bit dirty, and this particular one has excellent night vibe (if your interested in improving your spanish skills). I stayed there for more or less 10 days and finally left it feeling a bit sad leaving that little crowd behind. Super cool! — Rika von Trinity , Canada (2010-12-12)
Dirty, loud, unfriendly I've been traveling for almost two decades now and Playa del Carmens "Urban Hostel" has been one of the worst places i've ever seen. Nearly the whole complex -- walls and ceiling -- seems to consist of thin chipboards. If someone in the upper floor makes a step you'll hear it. The walls don't meet the ceiling, there is a 30 centimeter gap between it, so there will be no privacy even in the private rooms. Beside that it is dirty, really dirty. Bedbugs, cockroaches, dirty and perspiration-smelling linen. Only one faucet was working (with only very poor water coming out of it). The toilet was dirty and smelled terribly. I was there at a night in march 2010 and a large group that occupied the dorms made party til 3 'o clock in the morning, making noise and smoking inside the dorms and the common area (remember -= a gap between walls and ceiling, so the smoke went inside my room while i tried to sleep. The attendant staff member joined the party and told me "You should have taken a hotel if you want a silent area!" no joke. — Christoph , Germany (2010-04-06)

Very cool Ok it's not as clean as other hostels but get over that! It's very good located and cheap for Playa del Carmen. The staff is great and the place is very original and personal (in comparison with the 'clean' tourist factories some people seem to like more). I've had a great time there and there were no bedbugs. If you are in Playa del Carmen, go to Urban Hostel. — Tom Verstraete , Belgium (2010-02-01)

Great I stay in the hostel for two days leaving three days ago. The dorms are good and have doors, there is no water problem, and everybody is super nice. It cost me 7 dollars night so it's extremely cheap and the breakfast was not great but good enough. I really recommend go there, you will have a great time. — Yaiza , Spain (2009-10-20)
Filthy awful place booked in to a room in the top near the TV lounge, initially staff were friendly, and that soon changed after they got their money, uncooperative, and not friendly at all. The room was the worst i stayed in in five weeks traveling through central america, with dead cockroaches on the floor, in the light, bedbugs, pubic hairs all over the sheet (the bed or room had obviously not been cleaned in weeks) -- it was so bad that i checked out at 7 a.m. after thirty minutes' sleep. I am a backpacker travel consultant so am used to the budget accommodation, so im not being disgruntled unfairly, this was one of the worst places I have stayed in sixteen years of backpacking through forty-five countries, and that really says something. — anon travel agent , english (2009-09-02)

Not Bad I was a visitor to this hostel in 2007. I had no Idea how long I would stay in Playa Del Carman for maybe a week or two. I stayed a month. I'm a clean fellow and like things that way. I got by with minimal complaints after a month it was time for me to go. All in all this is a Hostel not a five-star hotel but it works, the people who ran it did the job well. Yes the Kitchen aint the best but it does the job. You're in Mexico eat out, go to Walmart, and pick up food/sandwich whatever. it's not a place to cook anyhow. The people that came in and out of that hostel where great we all got along and went out Numerous nights. If you are the type to keep to yourself this place aint for you or it just may -- you may meet someone to drag you out. Have fun at this hostel. It's close to beach and bus station. — Paul , Canada (2009-02-13)
Terrible come here if you like your bed with bedbugs. the lady at the reception has very bad attitude as well. when i brought up the problem about the bedbugs, she just said we never had that problem before and proceeded as if there was nothing wrong at all. no apology, not even an acknowledgment that there is a problem. another hostel i stayed at with a bedbug problem at least gave me a free night stay. here, nothing at all. steer clear of here. there was also a problem with the water supply in the morning. had to brush my teeth with a trickle of water. terrible place to stay. and the fans in the dorm werent working as well! — yiqin , singapore (2009-01-16)

Like home the people there very friendly. they have a beautiful terrace, a complete kitchen, Wi-Fi, dvds, ping pong table, and is just two blocks to the sea! I stay there in october, like a month, they where making a reconstruction of the dorm and change all the mattresses! If you want to meet young people in playa, that is your hostel. — Carlos C. , argentina (2008-11-05)
Not good the hostel is well located, but they offer internet access and breakfast and the reality is that they do not have internet, and the breakfast is just bread. they do have bedbugs, it is the worst thing i have ever seen. The male dormitory is disgusting and the female dormitory is ok, but with no doors. the atmosphere is great, people are super friendly, the staff are super. the real problem are the bedbugs, so do not go there if you wanna be awake in the middle of the nights full of bedbugs. — Gabrielle , USA (2008-06-18)
Bedbugs Bedbug alert! Don't visit "Urban hostel." The staff was aware of the plague for a long time, but the only reaction was to hand out some crap spray to their guests. they finally repainted the dorm room (fosa comunal) and actually think that'll help. If you really want to stay there for budget reason, don't sleep in the beds upstairs and talk to other guest first about their encounters with the "chinches." Besides that it's a nice place to meet people with a great atmosphere, so it's a real shame the owner doesn't care about this huge problem. — Lyrop , Germany (2008-06-08)

Nice I really enjoyed my stay! Actually I loved it, I even changed my flight reservation to stay a bit longer. They do have a bit of bug problems but the new owner Leo is giving an end to it. Leo is not around the whole time but he does show up everyday to see if anyone needs something and does listen to every comment and acts on it. The people that working there are nice (specially the guy from argentina) and can take you to great places only locals know. People at the hostel are almost like a hippie international community -- they all share beer, cigarettes, food, joints, and the weirdest of things. There I met people from Italy, France, Canada, Finland, Holland, U.S., Colombia, Argentina, Belgium, Costa Rica, Uruguay. The place is cheap, fairly clean, loaded with amazing people and movies, near to all the hot spots and decorated with mayan calendars or hoffman's murals. Quite cozy, i loved it. — Marijose , mexico (2008-01-17)
Infested with real bad bedbugs this place is infested with bedbugs. while sleeping i woke up at 2 a.m. to find bedbug bites and bug crawling all over me. the only two in the eighteen-person dorm immediately went to a hotel down the road. the next day we talked to the owner and he said too bad that is what happens when you stay in mexico so he would not refund our money (only $10 but principle over small money). Nine others overheard our conversation and all had tons of bedbug bites at well. Eleven people all checked out and moved elsewhere. urban hostel has to be one of the worst hostels i have ever seen. the light does not work in the dorm so you cant see all the blood spots on the sheet from the bedbugs and dirt from never being washed. Do not stay at this hostel. — brian , usa (2007-11-22)

The place is not much to look at but the people make the place magical. The Owners are wonderful and if you get to know them they may even show you some places that only locals go to like the Cenotes. I felt very safe a secure there and loved just hanging out with the people that were coming and going. — Melena (2007-03-10)
