Hostelz.com's Review
Circus Hostel is a nice place to be for your first few days in Berlin, mostly because it is located in Mitte area, and close to the main tourist and historical elements and locations in Berlin.

The Location

This hostel is in a central location, very close to a large junction, and a metro exit. As a result, most of the night it is quiet, and you can have a good night's sleep. During the day, however, loud noises are a bit disturbing, especially police and ambulance sirens, which are loud enough to wake up the late sleepers. Nearby there are a couple of restaurant and pubs -- some are open until late.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Bedrooms are of decent size, some with bunks and others with single dorm beds. A small locker is located above each bed. Each hallway leads to approximately ten rooms. The long hallways are all colored with multiple "circus colors," which might make tipsy visitors get lost on a regular basis.
Every hallway has its own bathroom and toilet, both are very clean. One soap device is located near each sink, but none in the showers. The main bathroom area leads to couple of small showers, each one with a lock. There is only a small space for personal items, with hooks and a small shelf in every shower.

Common Spaces

The common spaces are a bit small, with a sitting area, a pub located downstairs, and a coffee place, with a door separating it from the lobby. The pub is open only at night, while in daytime the coffee place is open. In the lobby there are sofas, some regular chairs, and a few rocking chairs, which are very comfortable. The lobby is usually not too crowded, and if you get there on time you can catch the daily free tours in Mitte area, which begin here.

The security level in this hostel is very strict. You need to have a magnetic card in order to get to any location in this place, including the elevator, and the main entrance at night. The most absurd thing is that if you wish to use the stairs instead of the elevator you still need to wait for it to get to the ground floor, as the elevator separates between the stairs and the lobby.

Summary

If you are a tourist who wants to see the basic attractions of Berlin, this would be a good option to choose from the variety of hostels. Feeling safe and comfortable, you will enjoy the pleasant atmosphere, and feel almost like you are in a circus tent.

5   Quality hostel Circus hostel is a little expensive, but is worth the price. The room I stayed in was large and open, with four massive windows and a nice view of the street. There was a table and chairs in the room and powerpoints inside each individual locker. The showers and toilets are clean and rarely crowded. The staff were helpful and friendly.  , age 24 ()
5   Very good stay The rooms were very spacious and clean as were the washrooms. One thing that was annoying in the washrooms was the lights would time out so I found they were turned off on me while brushing my teeth. The staff at the front are very helpful with places to eat/hang out. The buffet breakfast had a good, healthy selection of food. The entire style of the hostel was very modern/funky. It's located in a great area right next to the U Bahn and has quite a few cafés and restaurants nearby. I would recommend the pizza place beside the doner kebab place (not to be confused with the pizza place inside the doner kebab place). Overall I had a great stay.  , age 27, Canadian ()
5   Damn good This hostel has brought my expectation way to high for future hostels because it is just too good.  , age 19, Australia ()
5   Can't fault it ... Had a brilliant stay, such helpful staff. We had problems with train connections and the receptionist went out of her way to offer help. Best buffet breakfast I've seen so far, great selection. Funky style and relaxed atmosphere, great location and places to eat nearby. Recommend the Rosen Burger across the street and the Vietnamese restaurant, loved the food and great prices! Very clean and modern.  ()
5   Great hostel! Loved having the cafe and bar at the hostel. Very clean, good security, and good wifi. Very helpful staff.  , US ()
5   Excellent Hostel Very clean, helpful staff, friendly guests, nice rooms, decent location, good price. A very good hostel.  ()
5   Excellent Easily one of the best hostles I've ever stayed in! Super clean, power points in lockers, great staff good breakfast.  , Australia ()
5   Good The Circus is very nice, but teh loby area is nicer than the rooms. The price is a little steep for the actual stay--I was expecting more because of its high NYT ranking. But, teh showers and toilets are clean, teh security is top notch--hotel cards into each half of each floor and again into your room. The rooms are quite clean and it is easy to meet ppl from your room. Gripe: Security lockers are TINY--enough space for a camera and wallet only. But nice hostel--over my expectations for one.  , USA ()
