The Hostelz.com Review
Although this hostel is part of Hostelling International, people seeking dormitory accommodation are at the mercy of families hoping to book whole rooms. The hostel is keen to sell rooms to groups (perhaps a bonus if you are travelling in anything up to a groups of 6) and will not allow reservations for single beds to be made. Even if you arrive, this may entail waiting til after 7.30pm to see if any preferred customers want the remaining rooms. Not a great system, especially in busy times like the festival Danfest, where your accommodation costs could rocket 7 times if you don't get a bed at the hostel.
If you are lucky, you will get a room with ensuite facilities, good showers, and a balcony looking onto the sea. The feel of the hostel is very much family oriented, so don't come here expecting a fun young crowd. The kitchen and dining facilities are commodious and breakfast is a fairly good value.
To get to the hostel, take the bus (there is only one on Samso) to Ballen, and then walk south either along the beach or along the small road past Cafe Ofelia following the hostel signs. Ballen, although small, has a great little supermarket, plenty of eateries/bars, and a delicious cheap seafood bar by the marina.
All in all, great if you are in a group, but unpredictable for individuals.
