The Hostelz.com Review
GBT-Hostel is a nice little hostel that is more like a homestay than a hostel. It has fairly basic amenities, but for those who aren't fussy, or for those who have just come off the Trans-Siberian, it is adequate. The free breakfast is delicious and large, and is cooked by the friendly and helpful wife of the owner in her kitchen next door

The Location

The hostel is located next to the owner's house behind a secure fence on a quiet residential street. There is both an ulitsa Nakhimova and pereulok Nakhimova, and it is easy to get lost and confuse the two. There is a minibus route not far from the hostel that goes to the centre of town. However, it is a long walk from the city centre and the hostel is not that close to shops or restaurants.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The hostel is located in a house, and so the rooms aren't large dorms, and are in the house's original bedrooms. There are two beds in each of the rooms, and while two are quite comfortable, the others are not. However, the linen provided is quite comfortable, and the setup is adequate for those not seeking a five-star hotel. There is one small bathroom in the house with a shower, sink, toilet, and washing machine, and is quite clean. The shower has decent water pressure and a place to put soap.

Common Spaces

There is a living room with a television and couch where travelers can socialize, as well as a rudimentary kitchen that lacks a refrigerator. However, it does have benches, a table, and an electric kettle with which one can make a cup of tea. There is a computer with free internet, but it is located in one of the dorm rooms, so if someone is sleeping in that room, it's a little difficult to use. The guests at the hostel seem to be fairly laid-back non-partiers, and when we were there, there was only one other guest.

Summary

This hostel is quite adequate for a short stay in the middle of a Trans-Siberian journey. Although the lack of a refrigerator is a nuisance, the fact that there are so few guests in this hostel can partially make up for that. The owners are friendly and helpful, and cook a delicious breakfast in the morning that is delivered for whatever time you arrange in advance.

5 Everything was very nice, very cute house with a garden outside, very authentic feeling. Very nice owner with family, very helpful and friendly. This was my first experience with a hostel and I am very pleased. The siberian trip was wonderful and this hostel contributed to my whole trip. They have also the cutest dog Szlapa and no he dosen´t bark.   — Customer review (2011-08-08) Hostelbookers
4 It has a nice homely atmosphere, as it is the back part of their house! A nice big kitchen which is well stocked. Pick up from the station and a washing machine are bonuses we liked very much. The mum is very helpful and friendly.   — Customer review (2011-05-23) Hostelbookers

3 Property was quiet and is split into 4 rooms - 2 with bunks sleeping 3/4 each and 2 private rooms. Internet was helpful but could benefit from a WiFi router.   — Customer review (2010-08-23) Hostelbookers
3 Nice owners. The man, Andrey, has an award from natinal geografic and is one of the voluntaires working on the GBT- trail (environmet friendly project aiming to creat a kind of eco trail around baikal)   — Melina Danielsen (2010-07-12) Hostelbookers
4 GBT is hard to find, but why worry. Call, they will pick you up. It is very convenient to the train station--a down hill walk. Nice folks with good English run the place. The hostel is a work-in-progress--they don’t seem to be using skilled labor. Nice benches/table in the kitchen/sun room. Kitchen stuff is inadequate for self-catering. I enjoyed the internet, using their ethernet cable with my netbook. I also stayed in the Baikal Ethnic. I liked it, too. I recommend GBT.   — Customer review (2010-05-27) Hostelbookers
