The Hostelz.com Review
Grund Hostel Budapest reeks of the excitement hidden in the turbulently changing urban fabric of Budapest. This hostel is but a part of the complex that is A Grund -- a venue/club/education-center/playground/cultural center/preservation project/hostel. Stay here for a dip into the historic progressions and current goings-on in everyday Pest.
The Location
It's not too far to walk from most places if your a tourist and are enjoying the city. A subway stop as well as a stop on the popular tram lines 4 and 6 are right nearby. (This is popular with good reason -- the longest tram vehicles in the world shuffle people on a sort of a ring around the more central districts of Buda and Pest.) The bus station is only a few subway stops away. The train stations are also accessible. The hostel is well-suited for parking (there is a huge lot for free at the time of review) and bicycling.
In terms of amenities, everything is nearby (cash, food), but the historic complex of this hostel is being infringed upon by shiny, new condo developments. You can hit up the flashy new little mall right nearby or head up the road to a lovely Communist-era supermarket. (The building is in a brutalist complex but a full selection of capitalist delights awaits you inside.)
For nightlife you can join the party without going outside, as there is a full-fledged club in-house; stop in the bar for calmer times. Or you can head to the nearby neighborhood of Astoria for a decent alternative. If you want to spend 100% of your time on Castle Hill in Buda, you should probably stay closer to that.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Grund Hostel is in an 1800s building. It's set-up around a couple courtyards. These are now filled with the popular bar, club, and playground. Several rooms are located around these on the upper floor, while others are in an adjacent building. The digs are basic, but more pleasant than most offerings at such low prices. There are about six beds per room, no bunks. Decoration varies by room, but doesn't matter much considering the old building, with its modern adaptations, provides quite the atmosphere on its own. The hostel is laid-back about which room they put you up in, so don't have a freak-out if your group is split up, if you have to sleep in a room with boys, or if there are six bodies instead of four sharing with you. Cleanliness is fine.
Bathrooms are en-suite, but well separated from the sleeping area, so you won't be rudely awakened by people who take showers at times where you sleep. Bathrooms are well-suited. Its one room with toilet and shower for each dorm (about one per six people.)
Common Spaces
Outside, there is a playground for the young-uns and a big patio, courtyard, and garden for the adults. Inside, there is a living-dining-kitchenette with basic fixtures just for hostel guests. Also for other users of the building, there's a big hall with a bar (also the reception) that becomes a club and venue at night. There's no breakfast, but you can buy drinks and coffee (fancy espresso and all) at the bar.
Summary
You won't be guaranteed a really quiet place to sleep here. If you are headed to Budapest for some fun and exploration, this should be your pick.
