The Hostelz.com Review
Jaimes Crazy House is more like a homestay -- you share the facilities with the family that runs it. They are very friendly and have some good information about the area. They will also act as tour guides -- this is the easiest and cheapest way to get to Valle del Encanto, just outside of Ovalle.
The Location
Just ten minutes' walk from the bus station, which is at the bottom of town, this hostel is easy to find, and easily identified from the street. It is in a quiet road just off the main grass square, and is a few blocks from the central Plaza, which has cafes and restaurants. There are several supermarkets within a few blocks.
Rooms and Bathrooms
There is currently just one dormitory, with six beds and a locker each, and a large window overlooks a ramshackle courtyard. The bathroom is shared with the family, and is very basic, but has everything you need. The family hopes to expand the hostel at a later date -- at present it has been open just a few months.
Common Spaces
The kitchen is equipped with a gas stove, large refrigerator, and plenty of pots and pans. The family runs an internet cafe, with a few terminals -- internet use is free for guests, and here is the only sitting and dining space, often with loud music.
Summary
At present this hostel is still in the planning stages. It is, though, the best option for cheap hostel accommodation in town, and a good way to have a guided tour of Valle del Encanto. The family is very friendly and has two young sons. This is a relaxing place to chill for a few days.

Lovely place to stay! I stayed at Jaimes Crazy House in May '09. It's a quiet hostel and basic facilities but has everything you need. Jaime and Magdalena are so welcoming and make sure that you really enjoy your time at the hostel. There is quite a bit to see and do in Ovalle itself but there are some beautiful places to see in the surrounding areas. Jaime will take you for a tour in the family car at a really cheap price. Thanks for such a great time! — Amelia , Australia (2009-06-04)
