The Hostelz.com Review
The popular Hotel Lucy is a charming choice to stay in Montezuma. A lovely, comfortable wooden building, it's super clean, quiet, and overlooks the ocean. The staff is friendly and helpful, but they only speak Spanish. There's lots of communal space to hang out in, but quiet time starts at 9 p.m., so if you're hoping to party into the wee hours of the night, look elsewhere.

The Location

Located about a fifteen-minute stroll down a dusty road into town or ten minutes if you walk along the beach, but you have to wait for low tide. And it's only about a five-minute walk from the beautiful waterfalls and swimming holes of Montezuma.

Rooms and Bathrooms

There is one mixed dorm room here -- very basic, but very clean and it's easy to sleep here being lulled by the ocean waves, as the window looks out over the ocean. If you're lucky, you may be awakened hearing the eerie calls of the howler monkeys. There are three bathrooms, all very clean, but no hot showers. There is a big sink in the side yard for hand-washing laundry, and clotheslines strung up under the verandas.

Common Spaces

There are two communal verandas, beautifully tiled, and outfitted with rocking chairs and hammocks and this is the best place to hang out and meet other travelers. There's also a large, well equipped communal kitchen, and a few tables on the adjoining side yard, complete with candles. The kitchen closes from 9 p.m. until 7 a.m. Also, step down to the beach from the lower veranda and there are two chaise lounges to stretch out on. If you go on to the beach at night to stargaze, best to bring a flashlight, as there are hundreds of nocturnal hermit crabs scuttling about.

Summary

This is an attractive and pleasant place and very inexpensive, but it can be hard to get a bed here. So comfortable, often people who do manage to get in will end up changing their plans to spend a few extra days languishing in a hammock. If you don't get in one day, it's worth to it try again the next day. And the staff are very fair, giving rooms out strictly on a first come, first serve basis.
