The Hostelz.com Review
Max Hostel is located close to the old part of the town (Altstadt), where most of the important sights are. It can be relatively easily reached and has a nice atmosphere.

The Location

The hostel already provides a map with precise instructions on how to reach it. It is a two-story building with not many rooms, in a quiet street but close to pubs and discos. There is also a club in the ground floor.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Rooms are just big enough for putting your stuff, not too big nor too small. There are not many beds per room, and they are always bunks. Linen is charged separately, but you can bring yours and use it without being charged. The matresses aren't exactly new, and the pillows are awful, but this can be dealt with. There is one locker per bed inside each room, and they are thin, but with some effort it's possible to put big bags inside them. There are no keys for the bedrooms -- each room has a locker in which you type a password to both lock and unlock it. It seemed quite safe for us, and the good thing is that you don't run the risk of losing the key.

The curtains work (for the first time in the last three hostels we stayed), but they don't "seal" the external light, so for those who have problems with light it's better to carry an eyemask. The heater is a little noisy, but it keeps a good temperature (you can choose from 15 to 25 degrees Celsius).

The bathrooms are very clean, always with white floor, white walls, white WC and sink, so you can check the cleanliness for yourself. The shower doesn't drop much water, but has big pressure. And it has a timer, so if you press the button, after some ten seconds, the water stops flowing. There's a small secret -- hold the button for five seconds, then more water comes and it takes longer for the water to stop flowing. But it's a little boring that every thirty seconds it's necessary to press the button again.

Each shower is in a cabin that contains also a sink and a WC. So you can do everything in the same room, this is very good. But remember that other people might want to use it as well. There are also some cabins without shower, but with sink and WC. We never had to wait to use the toilet, at least one was always available. There nothing with which to dry your hands, so you should bring your towel or paper towels all the time when going to the toilet. And the hostel doesn't offer towels for a shower, you must bring yours.

Common Spaces

The hostel has a kitchen in which breakfast is offered (very simple one, with bread, butter, jam, and coffee, and that's all). It can be used to play cards or some other stuff. There are no computers and Wi-Fi connection is charged. There's a pub in the ground floor, so no need to leave the building if you're a little tired. But it's not like it's going to be crowded. In the main entrance there are also some tables where people can get together and chat.

Summary

It seems that when people want to go to Bonn, they'd rather stay in Köln or Düsseldorf and make daytrips only. If this is not your case, this hostel is suitable for those who want to stay close to what must be seen in Bonn, and the accommodations are acceptable. We'd return there if ever in Bonn again (we think that Bonn deserves a visit).
