Hostelz.com's Review
The Cranky Croc Hostel is a professionally run hostel in the heart of the La Candelaria neighbourhood of Bogota.

The Location

In the heart of the La Candelaria district of Bogota, the hostel could not be better located. It's less than five minutes' walk to the Trans-Milenio bus stop, and around ten minutes' walk to all the main tourist sights. Bars and restaurants are abundant and are only a short stroll away.

Rooms and Bathrooms

There are a number of private rooms and dorms that house varying numbers of people. The wooden bunk beds are very sturdy and the mattresses are excellent. This coupled with the huge duvet covers guarantee a great night's sleep. Large lockers are under the beds -- they will just about fit your large backpack. A nice touch is that each of them has a couple of plug sockets, meaning that you can charge your electrical items securely.

Bathrooms are clean and the showers deliver hot water albeit at low pressure. Unlike in some hostels, there is room outside the shower to hang clothes and dry off, with a number of hangers to ensure that your clothes don't get wet.

Common Spaces

The hostel is built in a series of old colonial buildings and certainly has personality. All the rooms whether communal or private are well set out avoiding a cramped feel that you get in other hostels. Common spaces are plentiful and perfect places for meeting people. Just past the reception area is a seating area where food and drinks can be ordered at an additional cost. The area features a book exchange along with an abundance of tourist information and recommendations of things to see in the local area. The hostel also offers activities for an additional cost, such as bike tours or bar crawls.

Wi-Fi is available throughout the hostel, but if you don't have a laptop or smartphone this can be accessed from one of the four communal computers in the computer room. Next door is a TV room with an excellent selection of DVDs. The kitchen is an adequate size for the number of people in the hostel although they could arguably invest in a second fridge as space in there becomes limited.

Summary

The Cranky Croc is an excellent hostel in a perfect location in the heart of Bogota. Staff are friendly, the beds are extremely comfortable, and the communal areas are a good size. All this -- plus the lovely colonial building in which it's housed -- make this hostel one of the major options in an area jam packed with competition from other lodgings.

2   A bit dirty and very silly Place is half under construction -- they are fixing up a bunch of rooms that look half deconstructed. Another gust told me that they washed his clothes for free because he had bedbugs, but they said only he had bedbugs not the rest of the dorm. The staff generally weren't helpful unless you wanted directions to the party bus or gringo night. The hostel is on a street with lots of beggars. They've got a person standing outside and cameras so it isn't dangerous but there are nicer parts of Candelaria and nicer parts of Bogota.  , age 37, usa ()
