Sugbutel Bed & Bath is good for spending a night or two if you're only passing through Cebu City. The hotel has a lot of dorms, but not the atmosphere of a hostel. It is basically a large hotel that also has dorms on a few floors. It would be very difficult to meet people, but if you're just looking for a clean room and a comfortable bed, it's perfect.
The hotel is located on one of the major streets of Cebu City. It is not very close to the airport, but it is a short walk away from the piers. The south bus station is a short cab ride away. It is a large hotel that any taxi driver should know, so it is very easy to reach. The hotel is located in an area that doesn't have any restaurants or coffee shops, but it is within walking distance of the largest mall in Cebu City. There are many restaurants and a few coffee shops there. The area that the hotel is located in is not great, mainly because there are virtually no businesses, so you rarely see any pedestrians.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The dorm rooms are arranged in long rows, occupying two large floors. They are clean and very modern. The rooms are somewhat like large cubicles with a door, meaning that there are no ceilings. So while there are only four beds per room, in reality you will hear a lot more people talking, snoring, or just moving about. When sitting on a top bunk, you can see a lot of other people in other top bunks. Some of the top bunks have curtains and have a ceiling and one wall; others don't have either. The ceiling lights are not turned off at night, so it can be very hard to sleep if you're in a top bunk that doesn't have a curtain. All the other beds are comfortable, with the exception of the pillows, which are soft, rectangular blocks covered in vinyl and without a pillowcase. We have used a towel to cover it, but it's not ideal.
The bathrooms each have a few showers and a few toilets, in separate cabins. The sinks are also separate. The showers are kept clean and work well. There is no hot water, which is unusual, given that this is a hotel and even small guesthouses usually have hot water. There are no lockers in the rooms, but for a small fee you can rent one downstairs. There are very few lockers and many guests, but we didn't have any problems renting one.
This is in essence a hotel. It has a few common spaces -- one downstairs, a cafeteria, a few TV rooms -- but hardly anybody uses them, and it being a hotel, people are not inclined to socialize. The hotel is mostly used by Filipinos who are in Cebu for a night or two, either on business, or to catch a flight. There are no backpackers and basically zero opportunity to meet people (Filipinos or otherwise). The common spaces, just like everything else, are kept clean.
We would recommend this hostel to anyone looking for a good night's sleep in a clean hotel. If you don't want to socialize, this is also perfect. If you're a backpacker looking to meet people, on the other hand, it will get very lonely after about a day.
