Lal Ghat Guest House is definitely a reasonable place to stay. It's definitely the cheapest place in town, and it's surprisingly clean.
Location
The location is excellent. It is more or less in the middle of town and it is right on the lake. There are book stores and internet places and restaurants everywhere in the immediate vicinity. To find local food such as samosas, take a walk north along the river or hop on to the other side of the river.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The rooms are excellent and are quite clean. The dormitory is a long, spic-and-span hallway with the beds all to the righthand side. Also there are no bunkbeds here! The common toilets located both inside and outside the dormitory are clean and spacious.
Common Spaces
This is a very open-concept kind of place. There are common spaces on three levels, all outside. A television is downstairs and you can view the "Octopussy" James Bond movie each night at 7 p.m. -- it was filmed here in Udaipur. They also serve reasonably priced food, but no beer here though.
Summary
This is a good spot for the budget folk, but for services like laundry, look elsewhere as it is surprisingly expensive here. They have a bookstore and internet service. Their internet however is extremely slow. The best internet in town seems to be directly across the street. It is the fastest and cheapest and run by a kindly fellow who will also organize your bus and train and plane tickets for you.
