Description

Hostelz.com's Review
Mar e Iguana Hostel, which provides basic hostel facilities, is located on the outskirts of Bocas Town in a brightly coloured building, with a relaxed environment and a few hammocks for relaxing.

The Location

Mar e Iguana Hostel is located a bit out of Bocas Town, about a fifteen-minute walk from the main docks, and a fifteen-minute walk from the airport. The surrounding area is quiet in comparison to Bocas Town, however there are still many supermarkets, laundries, and a few restaurants plus one average beach, all in a few minutes' walking distance. The area is safe, and there are plenty of taxis available if you wish to avoid walking into town.

Rooms and Bathrooms

There are many private double rooms available, as well as a small, six-bed dorm room. There is also a camping spot, where the hostel provides shelter for the tents, as well as a double mattress to borrow. The dorm room is fairly small, with limited space for luggage. When all beds are occupied, it can get rather cramped in the room. There are also no lockers available in the rooms. The mattresses of the beds in the dorm rooms are thin and quite uncomfortable. There are air-conditioning units in all the rooms. There is only one communal toilet and one communal shower for the dorm room and camping guests. These bathroom facilities are located outside. There are only cold water showers available in the hostel. Rooms and bathrooms are cleaned daily.

Common Spaces

There is a "chill-out" area with hammocks, tables, and chairs, and a nice view of the beach. There are also power outlets available, and Wi-Fi, which can be accessed throughout the whole hostel premises. There is a basic communal kitchen, with some pots and pans, a few plates, bowls, and cups, as well as a communal fridge, stove, and oven. There is also a dining area, and bar with nightly happy hour. The signs mention a bar and restaurant located on the hostel premises, but the restaurant is no longer open. Breakfast is not included in the hostel price. The hostel is not a party hostel. The bar and kitchen close at 9 p.m. sharp. The vibe is very relaxed, and the environment is nice, with plenty of flowers, a mango tree, and a few banana trees. The hostel also provides bike rental.

Summary

Mar e Iguana Hostel is overall a basic, simple hostel, with a positive vibe, and plenty of information about attractions and tours in and around Bocas del Toro, as well as information about other nearby towns. If you are trying to avoid the party hostels located in Bocas Town, then this might be the place for you. However, if you are looking for a social hostel, where you are likely to meet a lot of other travelers, then there are probably better hostel options in town.

5   Great place! Love the separate cabin w/AC; don't book here in Bocas without 1 because it gets Blazing Hot! Access to the kitchen was really helpful for our breakfast in the morning. Would absolutely recommend to our Friends. Thanx for a great stay.  , age 58, Canadian ()
5   Great Staff and lovely grounds! From the moment we walked into the hostel til the our last night, the staff was great! As we were checking in with a nice but quiet woman (who we found out later was one of the owners) the gentleman (which we also found out was also an owner and husband of the quiet woman) mentioned they'll be taking a boat ride to Dolphin Bay and Zapatilla the next day for only $35pp. Since we just got there we asked if we could let him know later and he said ok. After discussing a bit with my husband we let them know yes and made a $10 deposit each. That evening we went to get more money out of the atm and found that is was out of service. The next morning we awoke to find the same thing. We even tried to go back later to only find it still out of order. By the way, there is only one bank and 2 atm's (at the bank) on the whole island!! The owner Ricardo was very understanding and said to just get it to him later. Off we went to with a handful of other people to a wonderful day of dolphin sightings, snorkeling, beautiful turquoise waters and even a sloth sighting!!! We had such a great time and would definitely come back to stay. Oh and for the rooms ... we had a private room with a/c, double bed, porch with hammock and free wifi ... nothing very fancy but all that we needed.  , USA ()
4   Good Hostel Basic hostel. Not close to downtown but right next to the beach. food stores very close. cheap taxis make getting around the island very easy. Good people running it.  , USA ()
