The Hostelz.com Review
Pelican Larry Hostel is located in the Granada area of Cali, one of the safest areas of Cali, close to city centre´s main attractions including the Zona Rosa and the many eateries and facilities required by backpackers on Calles 6A & 6B. The hostel is run by Gunther from Germany and his Colombian wife. He takes time to get to know his guests and will remember your name while you stay. He also speaks fluent English, which is good for non-Spanish speakers.
The Location
There are many bars in the area, and a taxi to Menga, a strip outside of the city boundaries, takes about fifteen minutes. The Chipichape shopping mall is located about thirty minutes' walk from the hostel and is the best place to replace any missing items or fill the backpack with new clothes. The location is reasonably safe at night, but taxis are advised. The bus station is about twenty minutes' walk from the hostel, but taxis are recommended at night. At night the main hostel gate is locked and only opened by the night staff when guests return.
Rooms and Bathrooms
There are approximately fifty very comfortable beds with good mattresses in Pelican Larry. Rooms are extremely clean and bright -- painted white -- and have been renovated recently. There are different types of rooms available ranging from singles and private doubles to six- and ten-bed dorms. The dorm rooms are extremely spacious and have wardrobe space for unpacking your backpack.
The bathrooms are individual bathrooms with WC, basin, and shower rather than large communal bathrooms. Additional rooms and bathrooms were being added during our stay. There are security lockers in the common area but you must provide your own lock.
Common Spaces
The hostel has a number of common areas where single travelers can meet others. The reception area contains a lot of information on other locations in Colombia. There is a TV room with a large screen plasma TV and comfortable couches -- great for watching international sport or watching one of the DVDs from the large collection available at reception (fully refundable deposit required). There is also a book exchange.
Three modern computers are available for internet use (not included in price) but Wi-Fi is available if you bring your own device. There is a kitchen area available for the guest use, which is spacious and has all the necessary facilities and equipment to make a good meal. Free coffee is always available in the kitchen.
After making your meal or getting a take-away, you can dine at the large picnic bench in the garden/patio area. On Sunday nights, Gunther cooks an awesome barbecue with meat, salad, and potatoes (there is an extra charge for this). A fridge in the reception area is always stocked with soft drinks and Colombian beers and operates on an honesty system during the day if there is no one at reception.
Summary
This is an excellent hostel, with pristine, clean rooms and bathrooms and a good location with excellent hostel facilities. A further mention must go to Gunther, who takes pleasure in helping his guests. He is knowledgeable on Cali and surrounding areas and is approachable if you are seeking further travel advice.

Awesome Atmosphere Pelican Larry's is a hostel where you can meet great people in relaxed comfortable atmosphere. Beds are comfortable, and the showers are hot! — Devin Raskin , Canada (2009-11-08) Great Hostel! I stayed at Pelican Larry for two weeks and couldn't have been more pleased! The rooms were kept very clean, the BBQ for 11,000 pesos every Wed and Sun night was more than I could eat and the staff were all friendly and helpful. Larry knows all the best places to go, whether it is dining, dancing salsa, or outdoor activities. Pelican Larry Hostel is on a fairly quiet street and is in a safe neighborhood.
