Budget Istanbul Hostel is an acceptable place to stay when traveling on a tight budget, but don't come expecting much by way of the rooms, bathrooms, or general hostel facilities. But thanks to a very friendly owner, an epic rooftop cafe/bar, and a Sultanahamet central location, you won't leave being completely disappointed with your stay in Istanbul.
The Location
The hostel is located in the Sultanahamet neighborhood of Istanbul along with most of the cities' other hostels, hotels, and tourist attractions. Only minutes away from the Blue Mosque, Aya Sofia, the Hippodrome, and all the carpet shops you could ever imagine! The hostel is also located on a quiet street so you should be able to catch up on your sleep. Istanbul isn't blessed with a very comprehensive public transit system, but the Sultanahamet tram stop is a quick and impressive ten-minute walk away from Budget Istanbul Hostel.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The dormitory at Budget Istanbul Hostel leaves you wanting more. Located in the dark, windowless, basement -- very near the day's washing pile and mop buckets. You shouldn't plan on spending much time in your room other than to catch up on some sleep. The hostel also has a number of private rooms which are not located in the cellar and appear to be more enjoyable, but for a budget traveler, they may be out of your budget. The dorm has five beds and appears to be shared by one of the hostel's staff members.
The bathrooms are typical to Turkey in that they offer in a very small space a trio of a toilet, a shower, and a sink -- and not much else. They are clean enough for the backpacker to feel comfortable washing up after a day exploring Istanbul.
Common Spaces
Budget Istanbul Hostel offers (as many Sultanhamet hostels do) an epic rooftop terrace with stunning views of the Sea of Marmara. It's a great place to unwind, have a cup of tea, and meet with fellow travelers (none were here when we stayed, but it's the middle of the slow season). The rooftop terrace also serves as the breakfast room where you can expect a traditional Turkish breakfast of tea, cucumbers, tomatoes, bread, olives, and cheese. With a TV and the possibility of free wireless internet (not working during our stay), this is hopefully what you'll remember Budget Istanbul Hostel for.
Summary
You most likely won't find any place cheaper to stay in Sultanahamet than the Budget Istanbul Hostel. Nonetheless, paying a couple extra Turkish Lira may possibly find you a hostel offering more by way of rooms and comfort.
