Swansea Backpacker Lodge is a new, contemporary, and spacious hostel that is possibly the best hostel we have stayed in. It is stylish and comfortable with leather couches, plasma TV, pool table, and a brilliant kitchen. The hostel is immaculately clean and ordered. It has dorm and double rooms (with bunks as well for a family) that are spacious and contain adequate storage shelves. They are well heated and contain wall lamps for reading above the beds. Swansea Backpacker Lodge has free wireless broadband internet as well as computer terminals for a small fee. It is right next door to a tavern, which has a great cafe, bistro, bottle shop, and a Bark Mill museum.
The Location
Swansea Backpackers Lodge is located next to the historic Swansea Bark Mill and Tavern on the Tasman Highway (the main route up the east coast). It is only a short walk from the local shops, beaches, and bus terminals. There is a private car park for the hostel guests and a bottle shop right outside the front door. The hostel is a quiet, easy-going place with contemporary style. It does not have a party atmosphere and you cannot hear any noise from the bottle shop or tavern.
Rooms and Bathrooms
There are double rooms, which also have bunks in them for families, as well as dorm rooms in the hostel. The beds are extremely comfortable and there are reading lights located on the wall above you for convenience. Each room has a contemporary unit of shelves and hanging space to store luggage as a window to let the fresh air in. The rooms are adequately heated and bed linen is given to you on arrival so you know it is clean and fresh. This does mean, however, that you must make the bed and strip it when finished.
The bathrooms are clean, refreshing, and spacious. There are two showers and two toilets in each of the amenities (male and female) and a double hand basin with plenty of bench space. The showers have good shower heads and are hot but lack adequate hooks to keep clothes and toiletries on. There is no bench/shelf.
There is also a laundry conveniently located next to the bathrooms. There are washing machines and dryers for a small fee as well as a clothes line out the back if needed.
Common Spaces
Architecturally designed, the common spaces in this hostel are a cut above the rest. The front room contains a pool table; three leather lounges; TV, VCR, CD player, and a bookshelf with a variety of board games; new DVDs; and music, current magazines, and books. It's enough to keep anyone happy.
The main dining room is huge. It is the centre of the establishment that you walk into. It contains two leather couches off to the side, a plasma TV on the wall, a small computer terminal, and plenty of dining tables adjacent to the kitchen on the right. It also opens through to a small courtyard/sundeck with extra outdoor tables and refreshing gardens.
The kitchen is just like new. It is immaculately clean and ordered with all equipment and utensils stacked neatly in cupboards or on shelves in the pantry. The kitchen has two stovetops, grill, and ovens and a sink to share. There is one large fridge with a freezer. The hostel provides plastic buckets with pens and paper for you to store and label your food in. They also provide free tea and coffee.
The hostel also has a neat breakfast bar next to the kitchen to sit and enjoy a snack or meal. We enjoyed meeting a few other travelers during our stay and the relaxed, contemporary atmosphere is conducive to this.
Summary
Swansea Backpackers Lodge is a contemporary, clean, and friendly place to stay. We were extremely impressed with the quality and design of the hostel and it is definitely worth a visit just to see what high class backpacking is! We would return anytime and recommend it to any single, couple, or family looking to visit the east coast of Tasmania and Freycinet Peninsula on a budget but with style!
