Hostelz.com's Review
YMCA Hostel is a good hostel for travelers. It's not far from Auckland's sights and you can reach everything very easily.

The Location

YMCA Hostel is located on the corner of Pitt Street and Greys Avenue, not far from Queen Street (Auckland's main street) and Karangahape Road. There you can find a lot of restaurants, bars, and shops. The next supermarkets are about fifteen minutes by foot. Besides, there is a fire station and ambulance station next to the hostel and a police station down the street. So, it could be noisy sometimes because of the sirens.

It takes about twenty-five minutes by foot to the heart of the CBD or the harbour. You can also take a bus (CityLINK Bus to get around the city centre). You can find several bus stops around the hostel. The Airport Express stops at Queen Street -- from there you will reach the hostel in about fifteen minutes.

The streets in Auckland go uphill and downhill. If you get off at the bus stop at Queen Street, you have to go uphill, so it could be very exhausting if you carry heavy luggage and you might need more time to get there. Parking spaces are available at the hostel for a fee.

Rooms and Bathrooms

YMCA has five floors (there is a lift available). There are dorm rooms (four-shared, female or male), double/twin rooms, triple rooms, and single rooms available. The rooms have a fridge, wardrobe, and desk and chair (depends on kind of room). Linen and towels are provided and changed once a week. Wireless is available for a fee. Unfortunately, there is no air conditioning in the rooms. Rooms are vacuumed and rubbish is emptied from Monday to Thursday.

There are toilets and showers on every floor but for females only on fourth and fifth floor, for males on first, second, third, and fourth floor. There are clothes hooks in the shower rooms and you have enough space to change. Toilets and showers are cleaned every day.

Common Spaces

The lobby area is quite big. Beside the reception you can also find there the Lounge Room, where you can watch TV, play billiards and ping pong, or use the kiosk computer with built-in Skype. The reception hours are from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. The hostel has two small kitchens and one dining room. The kitchens have stove plates, microwave, toaster, and sinks. Kitchen utensils, cookware, and tableware are available.

Laundries are located on first, fourth, and fifth floor. Washers, dryers, and ironing boards are available there. Washing tokens and laundry powder are available for a fee at the reception. On every floor you can find a phone booth. Outside of the hostel is a garden area. The YMCA Fitness Centre next to the hostel. You can buy daily passes at the reception. The hostel is very quiet (unless the sirens blare). Any kind of alcohol, cigarettes, and drugs are not allowed in the hostel.

Summary

The hotel staff are friendly and they have events in the hostel sometimes (pizza night, movie night).
