2  Batman's Asylum. It could be a good hostel but it is a shame that it has given in to catering to the degenerate bunch, crazies, and hobos. Hungary, the sh*thole of Europia, is the Anthens of the earth when comparing ruins as Grand Central. Sadly, I was in desperate need for a room, when all other hostels were fully booked, and found the Central had a spare room for me; I checked in for a week at the last minute. It was an unfortunate mistake. It has gone away with the sociality of the hostel environment; no cafe, no alcohol (thanks to the alcoholics they let live here), and ultimately a lack of entertainment, except for a discoloured TV, and this really destroys the experience for a backpacker, you won't make many mates here as they tend to flee after a week or two. But, that said, this hostel has the potential to be something, that is, after it has a major refurbish or something, but for a backpacker it is a detrimental and frugal stop in your traveling. If you're going to stay here, don't stay longer than two weeks or you too will become one of Batman's baddies in the Asylum. It is a crazy-people's land.  , Hungarian ()
4  Great Hostel! Was a really nice stay, friendly staff, clean facilities, and really cheap for what you have and were you are. Right in the main city area close to EVERYTHING. Fantastic Stay. Thanks Guys!  , NZ ()
1  S**thole One of the worst places I have ever stayed (and I've backpacked extensively through several developing countries). The manager and owner are inconsiderate and lack customer service skills. I stayed here one night. All night water was dripping onto my bed. I didn't notice until at one point, when I rolled over, I felt water dripping onto my face and noticed my pillow was quite wet. Perhaps this was overflow from the hydroponics system? Being exhausted after several days driving across from Adelaide and swagging it along the way I decided not to get up in the middle of the night to complain, but rather to lay with my head at the other end of the bed. As a result the manager and owner refused to give me a refund. We met the owner the next morning. He was extremely deceitful -- and had quite a slimy personality. He did not introduce himself as the owner and basically told us he could not help us. He then disappeared before we found out he was the owner. Both the owner and manager refused to talk to us honestly and left the poor front desk staff member to deal with the brunt of my anger and frustration.  , Australia ()
1  Worst place I stayed in 7 months travelling This place was the worst place I stayed in in 7 months! Other guests are criminals, alcoholics, drug addicts, or a combination of the 3. Do yourself a favor and stay away!!!  , Germany ()
1  Homeless Shelter This place was an absolute dive, I booked in about 5pm and booked out again about 11pm. If you want to know what it would be like to live in a homeless shelter or a crack den then this is the place for you. The guy in my dorm was an homeless alcoholic so no way was i staying the night there. Dirty beyond belief!! Smells of damp and mould. The door to my room had been kicked in and repaired badly with MDF. Building is in terrible condition. Even if you have no other choice than to stay here then think again, believe me it is a HOLE, pay a few more dollars and go somewhere else -- or there is a bench across the road. I know where i would rather.  , UK ()
4  Central location me and my husband stayed at this hostel in a double room. the room was neat tidy and clean the staff were nice -- always said good morning to us when we left to go get breakfast. its a nice old building in a great location, across the road from the train station. we will be staying there again. if you want to stay somewhere that is nice and quiet, stay in this hostel.  , australia / indonesia ()
4  Great i stayed at the grandcentral backpackers in a female dorm. it was neat and clean the bathroom was also clean it was cleaned everday. a nice smelling chemical was used. i met some ok guests. i was very impressed with the old building, the dinning room kitchen was very big. a great walk in fridge coolroom. i enjoyed the 2 weeks i stayed there from 19th april to 3rd of may 2009. all the staff were good and very helpful. i would stay there again.  , england ()
4  Good On the surface it is a really bad hostel. The facilities are poor, its not really that clean, and there are some strange guests staying there. However with the right people this place can be amazing! You can do pretty much whatever you want and it has a very kind of hippie vibe with people sitting around playing guitars and smoking weed (yes i do believe the third floor has a lot of weed hidden away) but how cool is that?! I dont know many hostels where you can go up to a empty floor of a building and make your own entertainment. Of course you have to be careful of stabbings (there was a stabbing), constant fire alarms (fire brigade was there once a week at least), strange guests (i do believe some of the locals staying there are from the nearby mental hospital). But all in all a very crazy atmosphere and very memorable, go there and make your own fun in a very unique hostel!  , England ()
1  Hell on Earth! I was stupid enough to arrive in Perth without a booking anywhere, and the only place with vacancy was "Grand" Backpacker Central. For just over 60 AUD I got a single room, which was all even they had available. I would have preferred a more economical dorm bed, but that was just not an option. In retrospect, I'm actually glad I did not end up in a dorm there. I had a look inside a couple of them, and they were just filled up beyond belief with foreign students not traveling, but living there. With all the scraps of food, dirty laundry, and empty bottles that come with that life. The bathrooms were dirty and/or not operating. And if they were operating, you would still have to carry your own toilet paper, as there was never any of that present. The only plus I can think of is that it was actually fairly quiet at night, and that the girl in the reception smiled when cash was handed over. The third floor in the building is off-limits. I'm not sure whether it's because the owners run a marijuana plantation up there, or because the walls there are about to crash down. "Anyone caught on the third floor will be evicted," a sign says. I assure you my impression of the "Grand" is not likely to be faulty. The reputation of the place reaches all the way to Broome and Melbourne. "You poor thing!," strangers would tell me and pat me on my shoulder when I told them where I had stayed in Perth. Stay anywhere else but here! In a pinch just a few dollars more will get you a decent hotel room somewhere in the same area.  , Norway ()
1  Oh my God, keep walking! I stumbled into this one on my way to another hostel to get directions, but curiosity decreed that I would ask to see what the rooms were like! This is a stinky hovel. No lifts in a rundown building, you would have to struggle with backpack/suitcase up at least one large flight of steps, maybe more. I had been given a key to check out one of the rooms and I opened the door into a small dingy room with bunks, the floor strewn with rubbish and a rather uncomfortable looking young female English backpacker was attempting to make conversation (or was she counseling?) a middle-aged Australian homeless woman. This is obviously one of those places that caters for the long-termers, the homeless, those with mental health problems, while attempting to make a bit more money while pretending to be a backpackers establishment. When I went down to reception the woman was too embarrassed to look me in the eye presumably a bit embarrassed about being exposed!  , England ()
