The Hostelz.com Review
Backpackers International Perth is one of the numerous hostels in Northbridge. It's located on the second floor of a building over a bottle shop and a night club. It's smack in the middle of the nightlife and it's usually full of people with a very easy going lifestyle. The price is quite cheap compared to other hostels and there is also a special weekly rate. There's often the possibility to work as cleaners and get free accommodation. The building itself is a bit old but quite all the furniture is quite new.
The Location
The hostel is located on Aberdeen Street, in the middle of Northbridge, the main entertainment area in Perth. It's a five-minute walk from Perth train station, the Wellington Street bus station, and the CBD Perth central district where you can find the main shopping streets. One of the Perth City free bus services, the Blue CAT, is twenty meters from the hostel and takes you all around the center of the city. You're also few minutes away from Western Australian Museum and Art Gallery, State Library, and PICA center for contemporary arts.
Rooms and Bathrooms
This hostel offers dorms and double rooms. Every room in the house has fans and all the rooms have windows, so there's always air circulation. Under the rooms there's a night club and on Friday and Saturdays night you can hear loud music until 2 a.m. That's good if you want to have parties and have fun with your friends but it's annoying if you want to sleep. There are no rules about turning off music and television and parties can continue until morning. Mattresses are covered with a plastic fabric, which is good for keeping out bedbugs in the hostel, but not so comfortable for sleeping (you will sweat a lot). All have bunk beds and lockable cupboards (bring your own lock), which can fit one or two small backpacks. All of the common areas are cleaned daily, but despite this floors and bathrooms aren't always clean. Bathroom is quite spacious and there isn't any queue.
Common Spaces
Common areas include kitchen, dining area, TV room, and an outside seating area with BBQ facilities. Kitchen and dining room are cleaned daily. There are four computers available at a reasonable hourly rate. The outside seating area is very popular during the evening. You can smoke, sit, have a BBQ, and listen to music. Free breakfast is available in the kitchen but it isn't very huge because you just can have milk, jam, vegemite, butter, and bread. There's free tea and coffee available in the kitchen, multiple stoves, plenty of crockery, and common fridges.
Summary
This hostel is a nice place to stay if you are looking for a party and loud people who like to have fun. It's not a very big hostel so it's easier to make new friends and know all the guests of the house. The place is ok although a light sleeper may suffer from the noise.

Badly managed, deposit theiving, untidy, unclean, and unhelpful This hostel is a dump. The 1st night I moved in they didn't even have sheets on the bed, they just took the money off me and let me suck it and see. I have stayed here for a few weeks and the manager is a complete bi**h. She would rather f**k the backpackers over and take money off them for using the wrong toilet or paying your rent 10 mins late, than be helpful and curtious like you would expect. The backpackers run the hostel which means you will have a french girl who can't speak english trying to explain things too you and take deposit off you. Its a joke. The only good thing about the hostel is that it is so cheap that you get a good bunch of long termers there, who make the place fun to stay and a good place to party. There is no way this hostel should have a rating of 90% + someone is pulling the wool over somewhere there. THIS HOSTEL IS ALSO ANTI IRISH. THEY WILL NOT LET BIG GROUPS OF IRISH PEOPLE STAY HERE. Yet they will let groups of 8 french and german people stay together. Overall I am glad to be leaving this s**t hole. — Anonymous , Irish (2011-11-15)

A fun place to hang out The owner is a guy from London who also owns the club, Black betty's which is across the street from the Hostel. He also has manages the Eurobar which is beneath the hostel. Tenants at the Backpackers International get special deals on weekends at Black Bettys, for example if you get 10 people to contribute say $10 towards a bar tab at Betty's, the owner will double what you have collected so that you have more to drink and spend at the club. He also makes a point of only employing backpackers who stay at his place to work either at the hostel or the club. The hostel is pretty much managed by girls so everything is clean and tidy. Its small and welcoming with a large living room to hang out and chat. It doesn't have a pool but you get to know everyone there and make mates pretty easily. I loved this place. Oh, the club downstairs plays music til 12 during the week and 3 a.m. on weekends so if you love your sleep this place wont be for you. — James , London, UK (2010-01-10)

Clean and friendly, Recomended. By far the best hostel we stayed in by a mile, it felt more like a hotel than a hostel. We where only originally gonna stay two nights but ended up staying seven, and would have stayed longer if it wasnt for us traveling to Sydney. — Kevin Liverpool UK , British (2008-07-18)

Excellent! This hostel was just what I needed -- a clean place to wash, a soft bed to sleep in and friendly people to chat with. What a fabulous place! I can't wait to go back! — Dave , Canada (2008-01-07)

Great atmosphere, friendly staff Only stayed here 1 night (my last before returning home) but would have loved to have stayed longer. Great atmosphere, great fellow travelers and staff, and also a great location, and the free breakfast and coffee is a real added bonus. — tim , uk (2007-12-08)

I worked at BPI for couple of months and had an AWESOME time there. Justin, the owner, just simply ROCKS! I definitely recommend this place as the best medication for every single traveler who needs to find a home. You try it; you'll LOVE it! — Sandy from Québec (2004-11-22)

May be the best hostel in Australia. Not because it's fancy or anything, but the people, the parties, and everything else make it brilliant. I Spent about 2 months here in 2004. — Anonymous (2004-08-21)
