Hostel Sue Candelaria

Hostelz.com's Review

Location and helpful staff make Hostel Sue Candelaria a good option in Bogotá, although it is not an extraordinary one.

The Location

Candelaria is probably one of the best options for your stay in Bogotá. It might be full of other tourists, however, it is lively, affordable and very central. On the other hand, the situation in the south of the city is quite difficult, while the north is like entering a different country -- much safer but at the same time much posher and more expensive. Close to the hostel you can find quite a few coffee places, restaurants, bars, supermarkets, museums. There are plenty of buses getting to the area from the airport or the bus terminal.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The dormitories typically range from six to eight beds, and are really simple but functional. Some of the mattresses could do with a change, however. Another issue, depending on the room, is noise -- the walls are quite thin. Private rooms are also available, and are probably worth the slight extra expense if you are traveling with a friend or as a couple.

Bathrooms are available within the dormitories and there are also some extra ones, so waiting is not really an issue. Hot water is a bit hit and miss; it is ok if you’re the first going in, otherwise it’s better to give it a bit of time to warm up again.

The staff seem to try hard to keep all areas clean, as well as to help with any other issue that might arise (booking tours is also available).

Common Spaces

The building is actually quite big and has plenty of common spaces to meet fellow travelers or to get a bit of privacy if that is what you are after. Next to the reception there is a large bar/restaurant area. Further in, there is a lobby/coffee area, which also has a ping-pong table. Then there is a TV area/living room, and finally a huge, open-space backyard with various tables, chairs, hammocks. Mainly due to the staff, the atmosphere is friendly and meeting others is relatively easy.

All in all, and taking into account the facilities provided and the relatively low cost (basic breakfast is included in the price), Sue Candelaria is a hostel worth checking out, despite the various details that could be improved.

Hostelz.com Guest Reviews

Hostel Sue Candelaria consists of two hostels and a private apartment. This review is based upon a stay at the hostel located at Carrera 3 No. 14-18. Although it looks small from the outside, Hostal Sue is actually quite spacious. Whilst this hostel does not appear to be located in the nicest/prettiest part of town, it is situated close to many of the sites, making it a convenient base for exploring the Capital. The Location This hostel is located in La Candelaria, the historic district of Bogota, within easy walking distance to many sites. Whilst there is a public transport system it is easiest and possibly best (especially after dark) to take a taxi from the bus terminal or airport. You get a ticket from the booths at either the bus or airport terminal, state your destination and you will be assigned a taxi and given a ticket stating what price you should pay. There is a supermarket and restaurants within easy walking distance of the hostel. Rooms and Bathrooms The dorms are not exactly roomy but they are adequate and the bunks are big and comfy. Some of the rooms lead off an outside courtyard and so can get a little chilly but there are plenty of blankets to keep you warm at night! The hostel is very clean and tidy and beds are made daily. There are a number of bathrooms dotted about the place -- some bigger than others, but each are clean and there is hot water. There is a hook for clothing but shelves are lacking. Private rooms with cable TV are available for a higher nightly rate, and some are ensuite. It is advisable to book in advance to avoid disappointment. Common Spaces At the front of the hostel is a large room housing a ping-pong table and a few computer terminals (internet is available at no cost as well as Wi-Fi for those traveling with laptops). In addition there is a common area in the centre of the hostel with tables and chairs as well as a heater for those chilly nights! There is an outside courtyard area with tables, chairs, and a couple of hammocks as well as a TV room featuring cable TV, a large DVD collection, and a few sofas. There is a small kitchen for those wishing to self-cater during their stay -- it is reasonably well equipped with a fridge-freezer, oven/hob, and microwave. Breakfast is provided (bread, jam, cheese, cereal, and milk) as well as free coffee all day. Summary Security here is good and access to the building is gained by ringing the bell and small lockers are available (located in the communal area) in which you can keep your valuables if desired -- you will need to provide your own lock though. The reception is manned twenty-four hours a day and most staff speak English. In addition to those services mentioned above, the hostel also offers a laundry service for a reasonable per kilo fee. This hostel is clean and tidy and offers plenty of facilities to help make your stay pleasant and comfortable.
