The Hostelz.com Review
Hostel Sue Candelaria consists of two hostels and a private apartment. This review is based upon a stay at the hostel located at Carrera 3 No. 14-18. Although it looks small from the outside, Hostal Sue is actually quite spacious. Whilst this hostel does not appear to be located in the nicest/prettiest part of town, it is situated close to many of the sites, making it a convenient base for exploring the Capital.

The Location

This hostel is located in La Candelaria, the historic district of Bogota, within easy walking distance to many sites. Whilst there is a public transport system it is easiest and possibly best (especially after dark) to take a taxi from the bus terminal or airport. You get a ticket from the booths at either the bus or airport terminal, state your destination and you will be assigned a taxi and given a ticket stating what price you should pay. There is a supermarket and restaurants within easy walking distance of the hostel.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The dorms are not exactly roomy but they are adequate and the bunks are big and comfy. Some of the rooms lead off an outside courtyard and so can get a little chilly but there are plenty of blankets to keep you warm at night! The hostel is very clean and tidy and beds are made daily. There are a number of bathrooms dotted about the place -- some bigger than others, but each are clean and there is hot water. There is a hook for clothing but shelves are lacking. Private rooms with cable TV are available for a higher nightly rate, and some are en-suite. It is advisable to book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Common Spaces

At the front of the hostel is a large room housing a ping-pong table and a few computer terminals (internet is available at no cost as well as Wi-Fi for those traveling with laptops). In addition there is a common area in the centre of the hostel with tables and chairs as well as a heater for those chilly nights! There is an outside courtyard area with tables, chairs, and a couple of hammocks as well as a TV room featuring cable TV, a large DVD collection, and a few sofas. There is a small kitchen for those wishing to self-cater during their stay -- it is reasonably well equipped with a fridge-freezer, oven/hob, and microwave. Breakfast is provided (bread, jam, cheese, cereal, and milk) as well as free coffee all day.

Summary

Security here is good and access to the building is gained by ringing the bell and small lockers are available (located in the communal area) in which you can keep your valuables if desired -- you will need to provide your own lock though. The reception is manned twenty-four hours a day and most staff speak English. In addition to those services mentioned above, the hostel also offers a laundry service for a reasonable per kilo fee. This hostel is clean and tidy and offers plenty of facilities to help make your stay pleasant and comfortable.
