The Hostelz.com Review
Tourist of the World is bustling, clean, friendly, and spacious hostel to be found right in the middle of old town Cuenca. It is cheap and cheerful, good for meeting other backpackers, busy and lively, and with lovely owners.
The Location
The hostel is found on Calle Larga, the most well preserved street in central Cuenca with many bars and restaurants. The street is bound by the Tomebamba River to its south and the city’s central museums, cathedrals, and markets within a few blocks to the North. The reception for the hostel is in the house across the road.
Rooms and Bathrooms
They cater to all budgets -- there are three floors of rooms surrounding a central courtyard, with singles, doubles, triples, and dorms, some of which are ensuite and some basic with shared bathroom. Some privates come with cable TV and some with private kitchen. The beds are comfortable and clean with no frills. Some of the privates have a balcony overlooking the bustling street below. The bathrooms are clean and spacious, and the water is hot. Towels, soap, and toilet paper are supplied, and there are power points in the room.
Common Spaces
There is a roof terrace balcony on the top floor with a funky and bright conservatory containing hammocks, sofas, TV, and DVDs. There is also a decent kitchen with good facilities including a sink for washing clothes separate from the food prep kitchen. In the evening, the bar opens and the backpackers mingle here, spreading out into the courtyard, where it can be noisy. Wi-Fi is available on the top floor free on charge. Security is good here, with a main door lock as well as a lock for each floor and each room.
Summary
Overall, we found this hostel to be very pleasant with a no-frills, young crowd of budget backpackers, which is always close to full. We were upgraded free of charge due to a double booking, and found the owner to be very helpful and friendly.
