The Hostelz.com Review
We ended up at Nomads Auckland Backpackers by accident and ended up with a good all around stay.
The Location
After being dropped off on Queens Street, we were walking to another hostel and mistook Nomads for the place we were heading. The front desk was helpful in getting our room, but not as helpful letting us know about the amenities.
Rooms and Bathrooms
We stayed in a six-bed room. They have rooms with eight and twelve beds, which are cheaper than the six-bed room, but since we had traveled all day and were tired we went for the one that would be a little quieter. We didn't have any problems with noise from the hostel with anyone partying in rooms, but a couple of people we were rooming with said there was a lot of noise the night before. There is construction on a building next to this hostel, so there is noise coming from that, but we didn't find that it was a big deal. Beds are clean and under the bed there are lockers. If you don't have a lock they sell them. Bathrooms are clean, with plenty of showers and toilets.
Common Spaces
They have two common rooms, but both were packed so we didn't really get a chance to use them. There is limited seating, and seating you may not want to sit on anyway. They have a computer center with about fifteen computers, which is great because they tend to get busy. You will need to buy a wireless card from the front desk.
Summary
Another great aspect of this hostel is they have a free meal every night from 7 to 8 -- the portions are small but for a little extra cash you can upgrade the meal and beer. Happy hour is from 6 to 8 p.m. in the bar and they give out fun prizes (tours). The kitchen doesn't seem all that clean, and around dinner time is packed, so it can be hard to use. There is a free tour around the city but you need to book early because everyone has the same idea.
