The Hostelz.com Review
B&B Three Turtles Hostel is a tiny, cozy hostel a little bit off the beaten path, but still very convenient and great for a "homey" stay in Split.
The Location
Three Turtles is located in a quiet residential area about a ten-minute walk from the tourist center of Split, the Harbor, bus and train stations. It can be a little difficult to find at first, and the sign on the gate is very small. But once you've found the place, you can walk to almost anywhere in Split quickly and easily enough. There are several small shops and a large supermarket on the main road nearby.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The rooms -- which house four to six people each -- are clean, if nondescript, with comfortable bunks equipped with cozy duvets. Guests receive a key for the front gate as well as their own room. There are large locker/cabinets assigned to each bed. The bathroom is like being in a normal house -- a one-room deal with shower and toilet, mirror, drawers, plenty of hooks and shelf space, and soap provided. It's all very clean and the shower is hot and good.
Common Spaces
The common room includes a small kitchen which is nevertheless stocked with quite a good range of dishes and appliances, as well as free oils and spices. There is a large table with a wrap-around leather couch and a big brick fireplace. There are tourist guides and other books available, as well as a free internet computer with no time limit. With the low lighting and various figurines and trinkets positioned around the room it can be a little reminiscent of visiting a relative whose house hasn't changed since the seventies, but that also may be part of its appeal. The garden, with the promised three turtles (plus one more) can be lovely when the weather is nice. Luggage can be left in the common room the day you check out.
Summary
This hostel is small (with only two rooms), so although the layout is indeed very conducive to socializing, it's probably a better place for someone looking to feel at home and have a quiet, relaxing stay rather than looking to meet lots of people to party with. The woman who runs the place (and her boyfriend) are very friendly and helpful, and truly want to help you have a good time in Split. They are always willing to answer questions and have lots of good tips about restaurants and things to do. If you're tired of big institutional hostels or crazy party places and would prefer to feel like you're visiting the home of some long-lost Croatian friends or relatives, this is the place.
