The Hostelz.com Review
Rainbow Retreat Nimbin is everything that you can expect in Nimbin. It's a relaxing place inside the nature of Nimbin. The dormitory is a prefabricated building separated from reception and the original cafe and there are also hippie bungalows and an area for camping. It's not like every other hostel -- here, the manager wants to get you in contact with the spirit of Nimbin. The sign "The age of Aquarius lives here" that you can see when entering, says it all.
The Location
The place is a little far from the Nimbin -- you have to walk fifteen minutes to arrive at the shops, but it's not bad. Also there is a free bus tour from Byron Bay that you can use if you book for three nights, called the "Happy Coach" -- and it's true.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Dormitory is quite clean, and there is a common area with TV and a kitchen with everything you need. There are also other common areas separated from rooms where you can smoke, burn a fire in the night, and socialize with the other travelers. These spaces are furnished in a retro, seventies style that's in harmony with the rest of the place.
Summary
The Rainbow Retreat is a place where you can be in contact with nature, take a walk to the close river, and relax in another mode away from all the other commercial accommodations that you've visited before. Also Nimbin's people are different -- watch for alternative energies (solar/wind), collect items for recycling, catch the rain water, understand the ecosystem. This is a place very close to the hippie culture.

Like a commune ... not perfect but very interesting first time i came to rainbow retreat is 2008 and was like a dream for me ... i was free to do many things here, i like to make music and paint. now i have come 3 times.it is cheap and i even get discount for one week. the rooms and cabins are old and many are near the forest and trees. the beds are good and common rooms are friendly, outside ones only for smoking. the owner and the helpers care about me and are friendly too ... not far to walk to the village. i meet the police when they come to visit and they were very friendly too, i love the river and the trees here, this place is good, i come back when i can, in japan i dream about rainbow retreat. — wandering hippie , japan (2011-12-15)
Pathethic i stayed here for 3 nights. and was disgusted. the people did not care when i told them there was"poo" yes. actual sh*t in my bed. im not kidding, a small rat or animal had done its business everywhere. therefore it had not been cleaned even before i went in. they didnt even blink when i told them. in fact they made me pay more to sleep in another place. then when i left early they would not give me back my money for the nights i was not willing to stay. — Anonymous , australia (2011-05-27)
