Fantastic! While in town for a family wedding, our large family took over 24 of the 26 beds in this spotless, cozy hostel -- we had a fantastic time! Candace was very helpful, warm and inviting. Plenty of dishes, cookware, and space for all -- so nice to have sheets and towels provided. Highly recommend! — Ginger, Omaha, NE , USA (2011-07-01)

Best hostel ever -- clean and safe for solo female travelers I have backpacked Europe twice for 3 months each time and stayed at hostels in 20 countries on the whole trip and have stayed at hostels all across the USA. This is the nicest, cleanest, and newest hostel I have stayed at. It is only 2 years old and this is the second time I have stayed here. The only thing it lacks is access to a tv for getting news and weather and others things. As for the cost it is cheaper if you stay more than one night and cheaper in the off season. Since the building must pass the new building codes and fire and handicapped codes there is a higher cost to build it than the other hostels in the usa which are all older and did not have to be built to the same specifications. It cost more to build so it cost more to stay here. It is worth every penny, You will not find a cleaner, safer place to stay. I am a single female and have stayed in hostels where I didn't feel as safe and secure. This hostel is as nice as any ski lodge I have ever stayed at and I have skied all over the USA. Most hostels don't give you towels or free internet. Those are usually extra. One hostel even charges for blankets if you didn't bring your own. Durango includes everything and then some. I will always stay here when I am in the Durango area and would recommend it to everyone. people are very friendly here. You even have to use a secure code to even get into the hostel so it is very secure. One thing, those of you using your car's Garmin GPS to check phone numbers of places you are contacting, beware the number for the Durango hostel in the Garmin data base is wrong. It goes to a phone that no one will answer. I know because I tried to call that number to make a reservation because I don't have a computer to travel with and no one answered. The phone is in the hostel but it is not the office number. I thought the hostel was closed because it rang and rang. It is the first wrong number I have found yet on my GPS data. — Beth , USA (2010-09-23)

Gold Star Experience I recently stayed at the Durango Hostel. This may be the nicest and cleanest hostel in the world. Candice, the owner/operator is sweet, helpful, and accommodating. She works very hard and is constantly cleaning. The location is perfect! — Mike Bluestein , USA (2010-06-08)

We had an awesome experience! This was our first hostel experience and it absolutely surpassed my hopes for a good place to stay. The place is spotless, safe, and convenient. Candace the owner was over the top in helping us to feel connected and welcome. The beds were very comfortable, the bathrooms large with locking private shower doors, and the kitchen well stocked with supplies. I have chronic insomnia and slept well once I took advantage of the free ear plugs. Thanks Candace for a memorable vacation! We will be back again. — Joy , USA (2010-06-05)

You just can't find a better hostel, a prettier town or a lovelier st Its hostess with the mostest, Candace, is garnering with her amazingly comfortable hostel and its quiet, unique perch just 1/2 mile from downtown Durango. You're close enough to bike, hike, or drive into town, within minutes, yet far away from its Main Street bustle to guarantee a great night's sleep. Bring your goodies to cook justly praised spotless kitchen, enjoy a genuinely hot shower and a truly speedy and reliable Wi-Fi connection. This hostel is scrupulously tidied up and cared for, an environment so conducive to relaxing and enjoyable connections with fellow hostelers. Chat over dinner or breakfast in the kitchen, living room, or, curl up by yourself with a good book or check your e mail on great Internet connection. Candace is a fountain of knowledge about the Durango area, from Pagosa Springs to Mesa Verde, she can help a puzzled traveler sort out the best route and a great place for dinner. Finally, if you book into DHH, you have no excuse other than relax, climb a mountain, hire a hot air balloon, dine like a king on a budget pocketbook, travel back in time at Mesa Verde, and return home with great stories and a well earned rest in a spotless bed. Enjoy, and come often! — catheriam , USA (2010-06-05)

What Else Could You Want? First time for my wife & I (in our active 60s!) tried a hostel, so I was a bit apprehensive about dorm-style accommodations around a bunch of young people. What a GREAT experience! Clean, up-to-date, comfortable, free computers, kitchen with anything one would need to cook a gourmet meal (but bring you own food, of course), great hostess, reasonably priced (yes, it may be a dollar or two more than the cheapest hostels, but it's so worth it), and we met and chatted with some great "youngsters." it was quiet, relaxing, and we all just did our own thing. — Darrell , USA (2010-05-22)

Fabulous, Very Welcoming, and Comfortable I stayed there two nights and my family joined me on the second night. I have stayed in hostels before but this by far the best. The kitchen was stocked with everything needed to cook and the common room was very comfy and had such a relaxing atmosphere. I will definitely be staying there again. Candace has done a great job! — Annie , USA, Arizona (2009-12-01)

Excellent. Great place to stay. One of the best hostels I've ever stayed in. Candace is very nice and helpful. The place is super clean and looks like brand new. I can recommend staying there, I'll do next time I'm in Durango. — Volker , Germany (2009-11-09)

Unbelievably splendid This is a hostel only in the sense that there are dormitory-style rooms, and the prices are very low. In every other respect it's a very high class Bed and Breakfast. Brilliant facilities, spotlessly clean, little touches like free earplugs available in the (sparkling, modern) bathrooms. The only bad thing I can say about it is that if this is your first experience in a hostel, it will spoil you for staying in any others none I have stayed in or heard about comes within a lightyear of this one. — Doug , USA (2009-09-27)

Great place to stay! I biked all over Europe for twenty years and did five major bike trips in Northern America as well. During these vacations I stayed in a lot of hostels and I must say Durango can compete with all of them, even the best! My English is poor and it is hard to find the right words to express my opinion on this hostel. Go there and find out yourself! — Nico Schouten , The Netherlands (2009-09-08)

Fantastic experience I was traveling with two kids, eleven and thirteen, and it was our first time in a hostel. We stayed five nights at Hometown Hostel and had a great time. Candace, who owns/operates the hostel, is great. She obviously cares deeply about what she's doing and it shows! The place is spotlessly clean, the beds comfortable, and there's freshly brewed coffee every morning. The full kitchen, with plenty of dishes, pots, and pans meant we had home cooked dinners every night. Both my kids said that coming back to Hometown Hostel at the end of a full day felt like coming home, not like going back to the motel. — Jim , US (2009-08-01)

Excellent facilities, well-managed Not only is this hostel squeaky clean and incredibly comfortable to lounge in (a crackling fire and coffee in a pleasant mountain setting after skiing -- what could be better?), it is the management that stands out. Candace, the manager, is incredibly friendly and interested in her guests having a comfortable stay. We had an incident one night with a drunken fellow guest (not at all a dangerous incident, just annoying) and Candace kicked the guest out and generously gave us partial refunds. Though this hostel may have higher prices than most, Candace is clearly interested in maintaining an orderly and relaxing atmosphere. I will stay there again! — Charlotte , USA (2009-03-01)

Well kept; Great amenities; Friendly, helpful management Great facility, Newly restored, Good location. Candace is very helpful and works hard to keep the place in good order. Expensive by hostel standards perhaps, but the cheaper hotels in Durango go for $55-plus/night. and they don't have nice kitchens and ready to go computers. — COboy , usa (2009-01-06)
Outrageously priced The hostel is quite nice as other people have said but it is really expensive! It is one of the most expensive hostels anywhere in the western U.S. I felt genuinely offended at being charged such an exorbitant price for a hostel. I paid $15 for a dorm bed in Santa Fe, $18 in Albuquerque, $18 in El Paso, $20 in Tucson, but $30 in Durango. (Ouch!) It's not even close to reasonable. And don't tell me that it is because Durango is an expensive place. Santa Fe is just as expensive as Durango yet their hostel is half the price. Hostels are supposed to be a nonprofit operation, and an inexpensive accomodation. Some of the independent motels in town charge around $49 for two people, so two can get a private room cheaper than two dorm beds at the hostel. It's unfortunate that the owners have decided to charge such high prices for this place. I hope they will reconsider their policy of charging exorbitant rates for a dorm bed. — John , US (2008-10-23)

Excellent facilities, very welcomming management I stayed there for two nights. It is managed by the owner, Candace, who is very welcoming and helpful. The house is spotless and like new. There is free internet access (there is a donation box for voluntary contributions to defray costs) from three computers. I highly recommend this hostel. — Doug , USA (2008-10-22)
