The Hostelz.com Review
Phantom Ranch is the ultimate experience in visiting the Grand Canyon. The hostel is located at the bottom of Grand Canyon just next to the Colorado River and allows you to sleep there to recuperate your strength before hiking back to the rift -- you don't want to hike the Grand Canyon up and down in the same day. It is recommended to make reservations at least three months in advance for the summer months. We called two months in advance and were lucky to get one night during two weeks of vacation.
The Location
There are two trails that get you to Phantom Ranch. The first one and the most frequented is Bright Angel Trail, which is about 14.6 kilometers long and has three water points where you can refill your bottles. The second one, South Kaibab Trail, is shorter (11.7 kilometers), but is steeper and has no water point. It has two resthouses with restrooms if you need them.
The cheapest way to get to this hostel from the closest cities of Flagstaff and Williams is to take the open road tours bus. You can buy round-trip tickets for this bus from Amtrak and you'll also have to plan on the park entrance fee.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Each dormitory has air conditioning, one shower, and one bathroom. The beds are superposed and a little shaky. The person sleeping on top feels and hears every time the person below moves. Some hikers also prefer hiking very early in the morning to see the sunrise and avoid hiking during the warmest part of the day, so it is better if you bring your own flashlight in the dorm as these hikers go to bed before 8 p.m.
Common Spaces
The Phantom Ranch has a restaurant where they serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but these are quite expensive. The meals must also be reserved at the same time as the room. The best way to keep your cost as low as possible is to bring your own food at this hostel. The counterpart is that you will have to carry a heavier backpack when hiking. You will plenty of other hikers there that have a lot of experience to share. Obviously this is not the place that party all night long as most people will want to hike back early in the morning the day after.
Summary
This hostel is dedicated to people that want to hike the Grand Canyon to the Colorado River safely, sleep there, and hike back the day after. It seems great for someone who does not want to carry his own tent. Every year, the rangers at Grand Canyon rescue two hundred and fifty hikers who wanted to hike to the river and back in one day. If you want to safely hike the Grand Canyon to the Colorado River, you'd better make a reservation at Phantom Ranch.
