Hostelz.com's Review
Muffin Hostel is a decent place to stay in Salzburg for a single night, but it’s not the best hostel experience we've had. It’s large and has a sterile atmosphere, so it’s not great for connecting with other people, save for the people in your own room. The staff are friendly, pleasant, and helpful, especially when it comes to tourist information, but the place fails in its trappings as just another chain hostel.

The Location

The hostel is situated in the centre of this UNESCO World Heritage site; all the places of interest in the ancient city of Salzburg are easily accessible by public transport, yet it’s set in a quiet and safe area of town. Moreover, it is easy to find with GPS. The hostel is only twenty miles away from Berchtesgaden and Hitler’s Eagle's Nest.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The dorms vary in size and are laid out next to each other like a prison, one after another down long corridors. Similarly, the walls are a blank, sterile white. Nevertheless, the hostel is clean and tidy and the dorms have plenty of storage space. Whilst there is no secure parking, you’ll be confident leaving your vehicle out front in the hostel car park. All the dorms have locking doors, and a key is issued upon check-in. The hostel does not have a curfew, which is a real bonus for party-goers and late arrivals. All the dorms have an ensuite toilet, sink, and shower. However, the bunk beds are terrible. The mattress is unsubstantial and uncomfortable.

Common Spaces

Conversely, the common areas are excellent and really help guests take care of themselves. The kitchen is big and clean, with everything you need. There's a huge common room with three computer terminals with internet access as well as a big-screen cable TV. There is a large games room with table tennis and a bar where guests can relax and chat. The laundry room is equipped with two washing machines and a dryer (at extra expense) as well as clotheslines to hang up your laundry. The reception area is another leviathan-sized room as is the paved patio and garden, which has ample tables and chairs.

The dining room is generously sized and serves a good continental breakfast of bread, cereal, meats, cheese, and jams, but it’s not included in the price of your stay. There is even a room in reception just for the coffee machine. However, the internet is slow at best, if it works at all. The sheer size of the hostel and potential volume of guests really eats into the hostel's bandwidth. For the exorbitant price, you would expect a more reliable and consistent internet connection.

Summary

Overall, this hostel has great facilities, but it’s overpriced and is seriously let down by the poor internet access, its uncomfortable bunk beds and its impersonal, sterile atmosphere.
