Made reservation three months in advance, was randomly canceled. I made a four-day reservation for this hostel three months ahead of time. The day of my scheduled arrival, I emailed to tell them that I might be coming one day later than I said and to ask a question about parking. They missed the first part, so they canceled my reservation when I came one day later than I said I would. I had to go to Chamounix which is a lovely, but inconvenient hostel. If you stay here, make sure to speak very slowly and make sure they understand, because if they don't understand you and they make a mistake, you're paying for their mistake. And they even charged me for the first day even though they couldn't find a bed for most of the rest of my reservation (just one of the remaining three days). I booked through their website. Hostel itself is ok. Big and kind-of noisy, definitely nothing special and sketchy especially at night. You have to walk down an alley that smells like urine to get there. They charge the same as the hostels in real cities like San Francisco, Manhattan, and DC, but provide a hostel that is not as nice as the one in Baltimore. — Janet , USA (2009-11-08)

Worth Every Penny My girlfriend and I had an awesome time, and we made sure we met the requirements (college IDs). The staff offered us maps and advice for just about anything and everything, and they offered to help if they did not know right away. Their location is perfect, being close to the historical stuff for the day and a bunch of bars and clubs at night so. Also. they have events every night and really try to get the guests to mingle. We looked at hotel rates in the surrounding area and they were ridiculous! So we paid less, had free drinks and pasta, and met cool people from around the world. I wish more hostels were like this. I really dont mind the price either because it keeps the boring budget travelers that stay on their computers all night because they cant afford to go out at bay. the free beer and drink nights are great because the same drinks at the bar cost around $5. We definitely drank our money's worth. Will recommend to everyone we meet on our northeast adventure! Thanks guys! — Stephen , USA (2009-07-22)

Best hostel ever! I stayed at Apple Hostels in May also. They appear to be very strict on who they allow to check in, but if I'm not mistaken it's clearly indicated on this website as well as my confirmation email, which I assume everyone receives. Anyway, everyone at the hostel was simply amazing, including the guests. Kate and Ryan were particularly helpful in showing me where to go. I definitely recommend seeing the Eastern State Penitentiary -- very cool! The hostel is in the perfect spot, right near all the nightlife, and around the corner from Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell. They don't do free breakfast Monday through Thursday, but they have free wine and cheese on Tuesdays and free pasta dinner on Wednesdays. Oh, they also have a really cheap ghost tour on Monday nights, which I thought was great. — Lori , Canada (2009-07-06)
Worst HI hostel by far They did not honor reservations made over a month in advance. Their staff were very rude about it. They seem to want to pick and choose who can stay at their hostel like some sort of high end club. The hostel is far from high class I assure you. I can't believe they are part of the HI network. — JD , USA (2009-05-20)

Lots of Fun I had a great time at this hostel. Like any hostel it has its bad points, such as the size of the dorm rooms, but overall I would definitely recommend it. I found most of the staff really helpful and they even took us out and showed us the local night spots. Really great hostel atmosphere if that's what you're looking for, very social, with pub crawls, music, and movie nights and free drinks provided on several times while we stayed there! Dorms were too big and shower room definitely needs some work for better privacy but definitely a great place to stay and would absolutely go back. — rhi , Australia (2009-04-13)

Clean and cheap, great staff, and good location i went to philadelphia mid march 2009 and stayed at this hostel. it was a few feet off market street so location was good and safe and near public transport. the building was in good shape and the mens dorm and bathroom was spartan but clean. staff were great and knew where to go to eat (ask them because philly can be pricey in some parts of town). shawna, amy, and dennis were especially helpful. they had pub crawls so young people would probably like it (most guests were in their twenties). but if you are like me and in your forties and dont touch alcohol and like to go to bed early you will still feel comfortable. stayed four days and hope to go back. overall great hostel, good location and very nice staff. — pete from baltimore , usa (2009-03-18)

The best hostel I have ever stayed in How to start. It wasn't far from bus station, we just simply walked there. The hostel is in an small aisle, which wasn't stinking and it was homeless people free. Inside the hostel is really nice, everything in green and orange color. Check-in was fine, discount for ISIC holders and members of HI. Right next to reception desk are very good apples for free. Because we had mixed dorm which was on the third floor, we didn't take our big luggage to the room, we just left it in the luggage storage, very good idea, you can even store your luggage there after check-out till 8 p.m. The room was really nice, clean, air conditioning working, bathroom also clean. Only one problem was that the beds were little bit squeaking. Kitchen was also very nice and clean; two fridges; tables and chairs to eat; enough dishes, plates, and cutlery for everybody; phone. In such a kitchen everybody tried to keep it clean and organized. I liked the map where people could put pin from the place where they come from and also glue coin from their country. Next nice part is lounge with TV, where they have plenty of DVD movies, you can actually borrow them and watch on your own notebook. Tuesday TV night with free wine and cheese was very nice idea, just too many people there. Also you can find there plenty of bulletins and tips for trips and places to visit in Philadelphia. We were there just two days so we didn't try tours with guide from hostel or visiting bar, but I am sure it must be as good as all what is going on in this hostel. And finally the staff was so nice, very helpful, the CEO dog Mike was also very cute. So it was really comfortable and enjoyable staying for maybe little be higher price, but it worth it. — Veronika , Slovakia (2008-09-21)
Unsafe surroundings and rude staff I would definitely not recommend this hostel. First, you will have a hard time finding it, and when you do, you will wish you hadn't. It is down a very smelly alleyway across from a seedy nightclub. The street was full of drunks looking for a handout -- definitely not a place you would want to be walking around in at night. Secondly, they only honor the reservations made on the website if you are a student. If you aren't a student, you don't fit their "target clientele." I made a reservation, and they demanded a passport, even though I am a U.S. citizen with a valid U.S. driver's license. I could produce all sorts of ID with that, but not the required student ID card -- which, consequently, I could have faked very easily. In addition, they produced a list of alternative hotels, all with the wrong prices -- the hotels I spoke to were astonished as their prices have never been as low as published. In the end, the objective was to get the person/people (there were others who were trying to get rooms, too, and were turned away -- but no one was offered my now vacant bed?) out of there as soon as possible. The staff were rude and did not even speak English well. Their "rules" about IDs, which they said could be found on their website, were not there. In fact, in lieu of a membership card, they advise that you can pay an additional fee. That didn't get me a bed for the night, though. I am a teacher, and I have traveled all over the world and stayed in hostels everywhere I have gone -- except in my own country. Time for Apple Hostels to move on, I say. Stay here at your own risk -- you may find yourself scrambling for a place to sleep in a city where hotel accommodations are at a premium! — Kat , USA (2008-07-19)
