Hostelz.com's Review
Altea Hostel is a good, budget hostel located minutes from the train station in Nice. It has a nice apartment feel to it, and a quiet social atmosphere. The staff don't seem to really know what's going on, but they're friendly and help where they can.

The Location

The hostel is very close to the train station -- a ten-minute walk at most -- and near the railways for the local Nice trams and trains. It's about a twenty-minute walk down the beach and Old Nice, and the area isn't as nice as the areas closer to the beach. But, there are plenty of cheap restaurants and markets in the area.

To get here from the train station, exit the station, cross the street, and turn left. Continue down this street and make another left down Ave Jean Medicin (where the trolleys and commuter trains run). Then make a right down Boulevard Raimbaldi. The hostel will be almost at the end of the street, at the corner of Raimbaldi and Av. Desambois. It won't be very obvious, since the sign for the hostel is actually the storefront before the hostel itself -- the door to the hostel actually has a mobile phone store sign above it.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The dorm rooms are made up of bunk beds, which are tall enough to provide both the top and bottom bunk with plenty of space to sit up. They provide full linen, and they thoroughly clean the rooms pretty regularly. There are no lockers, but the doors lock securely. But, the rooms are right next to the rail line, so the train can keep you up late into the night.

The rooms are ensuites, each with their own kitchenette (microwave, sink, and refrigerator) and bathroom. The kitchenette could use more utensils and some plates, and maybe a hot plate, but otherwise it's good. The bathroom has a lot of space, and a tall cabinet where everyone can put their toiletries. The shower has ok water pressure and good heat, but no soapdish or anything for your things. Since there is only the one bathroom for the whole room, it can be a bit of a problem in the mornings, but usually it isn't a problem.

Common Spaces

There isn't really a common space for the whole hostel, but each room has a couple of places to hang out. The main room has a little bench and table, as does the kitchen. People in the rooms are friendly and social, but since there isn't a real common area people don't really hang out in the hostel. So, expect friendly people, but a quieter, more subdued atmosphere.

Summary

Although the location isn't great, and the lack of a common room is a bit of a downer, the hostel is really clean and comfortable and has good amenities for a low price.
